Without a shadow of doubt. I'm with the players on this one - i think the bar has been raised and the goal has been set. It's a win win situation really.
Jason Taylor Agrees
Taylor praises defensive effort in win

Wests Tigers Coach Jason Taylor has praised his side's defensive effort following a 20-4 win over the Parramatta Eels in their Alice Springs trial match.

Having kept the Eels scoreless for over 70 minutes before Fabian Goodall crossed out wide in the final moments of the match, Taylor said his side will take plenty of confidence from their defensive resolve heading into next week's trial against Cronulla.

"All up, it was a good performance from the boys tonight," he said.

"The boys were happy with it and I was happy with it as well.

"The big thing was that we worked to play the way that we’ve trained, and that’s what we did tonight and that will give the guys some real confidence.

"The boys did well in defence. It’s something that we are working on and it was a good result in that regard given how much attacking Parramatta did on the night.

"The boys will really take some confidence from this one — confidence in that what we’re working on at training is effective [and] if we do it well, we’ll get some results."

Hear what he had to say in full about the match in the video above.

without seeing or listening to the game.
what i've gathered so far is that the 1st q players were struggling to stray from old habits with the ball and gifting field position to the eels.

what was different was that they defended their mistakes, something we always struggle with, either defending dropped ball or penalties.

was good to hear that with all the shifting of players during the 2nd half of the game the defense stayed strong.
could be an indicator that the players fully understand the responsibility of every player, not just their usual position.

early days, and there isn't much attacking flair at this time of year that puts much pressure on the defense.

hopefully the lack of talk about injury means it was a good night on that front.
another day and some more confidence is able to grow after the youngsters performance in the nines.

can't ask for much more really.

How strong was Parra's side? I heard they had a few out. I think next week will be a better guide to what our defence is like given id assume the Sharks would name a near to full strength side given its the last trial.

I thought we were understrength, and some of our key weapons e.g. Tedesco and Nofoaluma were missing.

that's not the point - we built a wall. We never really had that in our culture before. This is new. This isn't about Parra. this is about us. Let's be grateful for change in this case.

Parra had more ball than us and they had some size. In the past we have folded against that but I think the new defensive structure will give the team a lot of confidence.

Thanks Geo and T1 for the updates.
Sound like no injuries came out of the trial which is always a blessing.
Not sure trial form is anything to go by but the signs are good.

Parramatta's predicted round 1 side from NRL.com

1. Will Hopoate,
2. Semi Radradra,
3. Brad Takairangi,
4. Ryan Morgan,
5. Vai Toutai,
6. Corey Norman,
7. Chris Sandow,
8. Tim Mannah (c),
9. Nathan Peats,
10. Junior Paulo,
11. Kenny Edwards,
12. Anthony Watmough,
13. Joseph Paulo.

14. Isaac De Gois,
15. Manu Ma'u,
16. Darcy Lussick,
17. Tepai Moeroa.

Its one trial against an under strength team.

People getting a little over excited. Leave it until we do the same against a near full strength team.

It requires much more than that. We smashed Canterbury and Souths last year.

Its about consistently putting in quality efforts.

Thank Jehova we have the "realists" to keep us optimists in check.....cheers guys.

TBH i dont see anyone geting too excited at all.

Its a trial.....Im happy with the defense which taylor has talked up and the team delivered.

And the lack of injuries.

You have to be happy about that!

I'm an optimist as well. I think we can do well. Its just that so far there is nothing to get worked up about.

Last year we had our moments as well. When we had our bench full of beasts and Teddy giving us some spark out wide we looked great. I just hope that Taylor realizes that a big pack and fast outside backs are crucial to winning games. All the skill in the world in the halves and spine won't mean jack if our forwards get smashed and out outside backs look like there walking rather than sprinting.
