Scans have revealed that Rabbitohs captain Greg Inglis has injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee which could see him sidelined for six months.

Inglis's injury occurred in the opening minutes of Friday night's match against the Tigers however it was not diagnosed as an ACL injury until the scans were taken this morning.

Rabbitohs General Manager of Football Shane Richardson, said: "The injury occurred in the first instance in the match, not as a consequence of Greg playing on further.

"Our medical staff further examined the injury at the half-time break and they felt the knee was stable, and they along with the head coach and Greg himself agreed that he would go on and play in the second half.

"I, along with the rest of our club, have the greatest of confidence in our medical and coaching staff to make the best possible decisions about our players' wellbeing.

"We have the quality of squad to continue our quest throughout the season and Greg, as our captain and senior leader, will continue to play a significant role throughout the year."

I'm not one to let a lol@Souff's opportunity to go by but this is terrible for them...

Hard to fathom why they left him on the field for so long...
Wests Tigers don't need a Coach.. The playing group has taken over..

I thought he did this to himself by trying to smash Teddy.

Wow. Souths will be a team in crisis by the mid point of the year. Mark it down.

Very sad news. I don't like Gus Gould and think most of the stuff he says is rubbish bu i totally agree when he said it was disgraceful for Inglis to have been left on the field.
It will make it easier for NSW this year.

Teddy's route to the Australian #1 jersey just got a bit easier.

Boyd will get the nod, but how the hell you could keep ignoring him is beyond me. When he scored last night, as soon as he got the ball i just knew he would score. Not too many players you can say that about. He's near on impossible to stop so close to the line.

Sounds like damage control from Souths

Who leaves a possible ACL injury out there for a further 60 odd mins?

Unheard of Id have thunk

Bad luck for Souths...we know all about this, losing our number one in game one

For a few seconds it looked like we lost our no 6. From where i was sitting it looked like his ankle was snapped.

The was ridiculous. And coaches have the gall to talk about player welfare around origin time.

It looked like an ACL injury the way he went down.

No excuses for Souths imo.

Souths are very short on quality so to have a long term injury to your most classy player is a total disaster. Also it is bad news for the NRL, a competitive South Sydney is essential if you want to increase your crowd figures

Souths and QLD will really miss him as will the Roos during the WC. Lots of stakeholders affected by one injury.

yea it was a crazy decision to leave him out there but i don't think it has any bearing on whether it damages the acl any further. Poor player management and a disgrace to allow a first class player be humiliated in that way. I would have thought the medical staff would overide any calls from the player or coach to stay on and if they can't even suspect a possible acl injury then Souths are in real trouble.
