Post match press conference

Post by willow » Mon 17 Apr, 2017 7:31 pm

Wests Tigers Coach Ivan Cleary and captain Aaron Woods spoke to the media following the team's close 26-22 defeat to the Parramatta Eels on Easter Monday.

After leading 22-10 midway through the second half before succumbing to a Parramatta fightback, Cleary said the result definitely stung for his side as a game that simply got away.

"That’s a lost opportunity for sure," Cleary said of the game.

"We were ineffective with the way we finished our sets for the last 20 minutes, and they really gave them a leg up and they took that chance with both hands, and full credit to them.

"There’s things that have been affecting us for a while — tries coming out of nowhere when we’re in control — but essentially we’re contributing to moments like that.

"Under pressure we were coming up with errors in defence, and that’s been happening for a while here so it’s going to take a bit of time to get some bad habits out," he said.

"When you’ve got bad habits, they come out under pressure, and that happened today.

"But we’ll get it right at some point — we’ve just got to keep chipping away."

While pointing out that his side still had plenty of areas to improve in — notably with their edge defence — Cleary also commented about the positives his side showed for most of the game.

"There was a lot going right today but some things that haunted us under pressure," he said.

"Our defensive reads and cohesion on the edges need some work.

"Anyone who has been watching this team for a while now can say it’s been an issue. We’ve been trying to make some adjustments, but you can’t just turn it on or off like a tap.

"We’ll keep working at it, but we were exposed a bit tonight. We saved a few but it was a bit scary at times. We’ll keep getting tested, and we just need to keep making strides to improve.

"We did well in lots of areas; we were pretty on top midway through that second half after coming from behind ourselves. We fought back really well after being on the back foot, and we went pretty well, but we just didn’t finish it off today."

Wow, the edge defence finally gets identified as an issue. It's only taken 12 months.

Today was probably the most disappointing loss so far this year because we had them and we took the foot off their throat. Those games are harder to swallow than games like the ones against the Raiders and Panthers.

I just hope this loss hasn't put him in a bad head space. We don't want him making any decisions out of frustration.

^ 100% .. When Eels hit back and it was 22-20 it was time for the captain to stand up and lead. He was found wanting. No talk, no ripping in, no getting up players. I dont care if players feelings are hurt, give them hell if they dont put in!!!

Mate thats exactly what we need. No emotion at all out there. Eels score a try and ive seen a graveyard louder than this mob. I want to see emotion because emotion shows that you care about this club.

Yeah I've been a fan for years of woodsy but the pressure has really got to him. Its a wonder the club don't send someone else.

I dont care if woods stays. But he cannot be captain and the price cant be over 600k. not worth more than that.

Contrary to 'Victorian -puritan-fashion' Woods haters, he was with Tedesco and McIlrwick again one of the best WT players.
If only we have less Lawrances/Aloiais and more players like Woods/Seumanufagai/Sue/Chee-Kam/Taylor it could easily be a different story :sign:

Exactly mate, imagine if it was Graham at the doggies, he would have ripped his own team apart and then lead by example and tore in for the rest of the game, but not our Captain Powder Puff. The whole team is soft as pillows unfortunately it's the Weststigers culture and it's lead to one being our captain. Its all they know, grown up inside the system. The guy is a big body in the middle and that's it. $1.8mil for 3 years is all he is worth and that's being generous for a dumb lump in the middle of the field that plays 50-60mins max a game.

Yep spot on 1.8m 3 years. Il be happy with that. If tigers give him 800-900k a year i will write them a letter that will show my displeasure in no uncertain terms..
