Lolohea out to make the most of second opportunity
Author Dan Talintyre Timestamp Fri 25 May 2018, 02:32 PM

After spending the past few weeks in reserve-grade, Tuimoala Lolohea is back in first-grade for Wests Tigers this weekend with a simple goal in mind.

Give Ivan Cleary a headache.

The first-choice fullback to start the year, Lolohea was in good form before picking up a minor knee injury that forced him to fight his way back in to the squad through the Intrust Super Premiership competition.

With Corey Thompson moving to the wing this weekend to accomodate his return, the Tongan international said he was determined to make the most of his opportunity and make himself "undroppable".

"It's been an exciting week to be back in first-grade," Lolohea said with a smile.

"I remember Ivan telling me on the weekend that I would be back; we were sitting in his room and he asked me if I was excited and while I didn't show it in the room, deep down I was pretty excited.

"I'm looking forward to being back out there with the big boys this weekend and take the most of this.

"With the way that the club is going at the moment, I didn't expect myself to be back in so soon.

"But the opportunity has come and it's really important I take it with both hands. I'm going to make the most of this chance and make sure that I stay there in first-grade."

While admitting it was tough to break back in to the side, Lolohea said that the club's depth and the way in which Coach Cleary is using the entire squad is a beneficial thing for both the club and players themselves.

"I know Ivan has said throughout the year that he's going to use everyone in our squad," he said.

"That's just how it's going to be and that's just how much depth we've got at the moment.

"The wins haven't been there for the past couple of weeks but we're playing pretty well so if we can continue to do that throughout the year, everyone is going to give Ivan a headache with the teams."

Hope he steps him. Really like as a player and think he has a lot to offer the side, just not sure fullback is his place.

think we should have stuck with him at 5/8 and signed a fullback. not 100% sold on grub not sure he is what we need.

He played very well at 5/8 last season. If he has learnt to chime into the attack he will do well at fullback. I hope that Cleary and Hodgson have used their experience to help him in this area. He is also tall enough to be a good fullback.

Really looking forward to what Tui will bring to the team this week, he has an X factor that we desperately need right now.

This not fitness is the thing holding him back.

He needs a lot more self belief. He should be running around in Sate Cup thinking I am the best fullback in this club and I will get MY jersey back next week.

If he gets the self belief right, he could be anything.
Its an opinion!

I really hope his knee is fully recovered and that we can see the return of the speed and power of his 2016 glory days. This what Ivan was hoping for when he signed him. If you looked at the highlight package from that year you would have seen a really special attacking weapon with incredible speed and footwork. We could use a player with those qualities now but, to be honest, I'll be happy if he chimes in to the back line now and again and is sound positionally.

Was very impressed with his interview as well. Looks a lot more comfortable in front of the media now.

4 from 4 in 2018 coming up for WT with Tui at the back? I think so, as we have been missing another option in attack without him and 3 from 8 sans him also points to that.
