Leichhardt Oval set for rare Saturday afternoon game

Post by Tiger_Fan18 » Wed 15 Aug, 2018 11:37 am

Wests Tigers will run out at Leichhardt Oval for just the second Saturday game in the last four years when they take on the St. George-Illawarra Dragons in Round 23.

Having already played at the suburban ground this year on a Thursday night (Round 10) and Sunday afternoon (Round 16), Ivan Cleary's side will face off against the Dragons in the twilight time-slot of 5:30pm — just the second time this year they will feature in the middle Saturday game (also back in Round 19).

What is interesting, however, is how unfamiliar the 5:30pm Saturday game is for Leichhardt Oval.

Wests Tigers have played 19 Saturday games at Leichhardt since the club's inaugural season back in 2000, but just six of those games have fallen in the afternoon with the majority kicking off at 7:30pm.

Of those six games, Wests Tigers have a promising 4-2 record with victories in their last two — a 22-4 upset over the Storm in 2013 and a 26-10 win over Cronulla in the final game of the 2014 season. Historically, the timeslot hasn't been the greatest for crowds (with an average of just 7,375) but given what's at stake for Wests Tigers and the strong recent form of Cleary's men, the attendance for this week's game will certainly surpass that number with a hefty crowd expected on the day.

I went with my young bloke (4) to Titans game, caught a bus from Central to top of Mary St but that took ages. Took the light rail home, bout 10 min walk, which took us straight back to Central.

Will be taking light rail again on Saturday with the 5yo daughter.

we could text you updates every ten minutes. Be careful over Indo, the volcanoes are higher than the clouds and poke through to Heaven

Does it still count as afternoon if the sun has already set?

Parachute in, or a water ops landing could work too.

I’ll be there as usual but I’m gonna say it again - really peeving me off that we only get to watch one game!
Maybe I’ll get there early, sit in my seat and watch ISP on Foxtel Go!
