Mateo try?

Post by innsaneink » Sun 20 Mar, 2011 9:34 am

14th min of the 1st half with scores at 0 - 0, the Warriors put in a kick into our ingoal, looked like Ayshford grounded it but replays showed he didnt, ball comes loose and Mateo grounds it for a try.
Ref incorrectly rules no try, Ayshford grounds it ....without going to video ref .

It was a try.

I thought the standard of refereeing was hot and cold last nite.. A baziilion forward passes were thrown and never called..from both Tiger

Although, I would like to congratulate them for growing a pair and like the Inu try and Mateo no try.. they are starting to get control..

Yep, Fox Sports asked the question why they didn't go upstairs. The ref made the call very quickly and in hindsight it could have totally changed the result of the game.

Yes they also said that harrigan has instructed the referees to make dicisions on the spot if they certain and at full speed he was probably certain we grounded it.

Oh well we will win some and lose some look at last year when the we got rorted by a decision late in the game with that scrum feed against the head.

Cant believe anyone mentioning it.Good job to the refs we got 1 back

Try but Inu's try wasn't a try, Ropati clearly knocked it on when he was trying to pick it up off the ground before the play the ball.

So it was fair in the end.

To the one person who says no try, I'm just curious, why wasn't it a try?

Ashyford seemed to have grounded it but he didn't. Mckinnon was there too but I think he was just blocking and let Ashyford clean it up, knock it out, ground it whatever.

Mateo dropped on it before it went out IMO.

Harrigan concedes Warriors error
David Beniuk
March 20, 2011 - 1:39PM

AAP

NRL referees boss Bill Harrigan concedes his officials got it wrong by not referring upstairs for a possible try to Warriors forward Feleti Mateo in Saturday night's loss to the Wests Tigers.

Junior referee Alan Shorthall immediately ruled Tigers centre Blake Ayshford had grounded the ball in his in-goal in the 14th minute before it came loose and Mateo dived on the scraps.

Replays suggested the ball had rolled away before Ayshford planted it and Harrigan agreed with that conclusion after reviewing the decision on Sunday morning, but backed Shorthall for being decisive.

At the time the momentum was with the Warriors, who went on to lose the Leichhardt Oval match 20-12, and coach Ivan Cleary later questioned the call.

"He's got it wrong, he didn't ground it," Harrigan told AAP.

"But I go back to my instructions to them first off, refereeing is all about confidence and confidence is making decisions.

"So if you put yourself in the perfect position and you're a hundred per cent certain it's a try or a no try, make the decision.

"What I didn't want to see from the guys is don't be drawing the square to send it up when in your mind you know that it's going to be a green or a red light."

Harrigan said Shorthall would still be asked to explain how he came to his decision.

"I'll be saying to the referee, 'Mate, what were your thoughts?'," Harrigan added.

"And obviously he's going to say to me, 'I was a hundred per cent certain Bill'.

"And I'm going to say, 'Good, you've made the decision, it was wrong, we've got to live it'.

"But I applaud him for being in the right spot and making the decision.

"When you make decisions inevitably you're going to come up with a wrong one.

"We all do that."

Harrigan said senior referee Tony Archer was not in a position to have questioned Shorthall's call and it remained uncertain whether Mateo had grounded the ball before the dead ball line.

But he backed Shorthall to continue in the top grade next week.

"With the replay there (on the scoreboard) I would say he would have known that was an iffy one," Harrigan said.

"He may have had a look at the replay himself.

"The good thing was he kept himself together.

"You'd hate to see that he then fell apart and that affected the rest of his game.

" ... That tells me that he's a competent first grade referee."

The refs have looked good this year. I think that's one of the few contentious decision in the first couple of rounds. Great to see Harrigan come out and admit a mistake rather than the garbage Finch used to ditch out.

There was definitely a few calls that went against us (e.g. Strip down our end of the field) and we won by more than a try, so the Warriors shouldn't be overly upset.

This comment is proof that the video ref needs to be scraped from the game.
The above lines are what the boss has told the on field refs.
This comment is saying that in the past refs have been sending it upstairs already knowing in their head what the result will be.
What a total waste of time and resources,
Now it seems they want the refs to act on instinct and have the balls to call it as they see it, but hang on a second, "isn't that the way it used to be before the video ref".
To me the line above is enough reason to get rid of the video ref altogether. It's evidence they don't work.
After all, the video ref was brought in to try to eliminate the human error but in the end when a human has to push the button there will ALWAYS be error.

Goodbye video ref.
