I've been really, really, really impressed with Matt Utai. Watched him at Cambo and he's mustard.

We've been burned by giving veterans a chance in the past. Earlier on in the year I pretty much figured that Utai would join the likes of Cayless, Buettner, Moodie, Nick Graham and john simon on our list of depressing and embarrasing imports of washed up veterans.

He looks fit and sharp. Seems to have a point to prove and what a snip for us to have him on a second tier contract.

Apart from Utai and lote have we ever bought anyone 30 or older who turned out good for us? I dont think its ever happened.

Does anyone know how he went playing park footy last year? I would expect he would have blitzed it, given the problems he has caused the defence this year.

I went to the game last night and I was impressed with his performance. I am eating my humble pie with plenty of cream, which helps.

he has certainly gone alot better than I expected, runs the ball extremely hard, and has been excellent in returning the ball from our own 20. Love his effort. However I think his defence is still a big question mark, and he is one dimensional in attack.
That said he is getting the job done and performing the role that he ahs been assigned, ruck it out of our 20

Enjoying my humble pie, I wanted Brown in the side ahead of him but so far he has held his own.

With ball in hand he is a weapon, my concerns lie with him under the high ball (in which he's hardly been tested) and his defence, which does need some improvement. However, his attitude and work rate is impressive, and he hits the line like a truck.

Have to say, last night Utai really went looking for work. He was everywhere, doing hitups, offloading, racking up the tackle breaks. He's just a constant menace.

I wouldn't call him one dimensional - he did attempt an interesting chip and chase, which drew a penalty for our boys.

When I saw that I had flashbacks of him doing that kind of stuff at the dogs in 2003.... brought back the memories of thinking "jeez, this guy is a constant headache"

Glad he is our team, still fit and strong, however 8 years wiser.

with the injury to Lote, he will be here for most of the season, so lets hope he keeps it up
Mini Tuiaki?
I've been calling him "Mini Tank". Perhaps "Miniaki"?

Well done Ink. I'm happy to stand on my record here too. I was strongly pushing for people to give Utai a chance before they dismissed him but I will admit to having some doubts after the Dogs game. Maybe some people on this forum will have a litte more tolerance to give players a chance to succeed or fail before they condemn Coach Sheens for including them.

LOL

I can see it now, as soon as he misses a tackle or drops a bomb that leads to points, the knives will be out.
It will happen sooner of later...everyone has an off day
