OK that makes sense. Probably not many players would do that (but most footy players would probably struggle to get a - for the HSC), but if he's got a few brains then it's more than worth his while to focus on school and footy.

A number of the top players have made their debuts in the NRL while still at high school, think Benji and Lawrence just from us, not to mention NYC, so it is interesting that they're pushing a standout junior talent along so slowly.

Maybe also taking him along slowly as we already have a gun fullback in Teddy!!

Is this a reflection of the current talent pool in the two districts, or just greater observation by fans from one area vs another?

Because it seems to me that the last two crops of local juniors are also fairly Balmain-heavy: Bayley Siro, Tatola, Sokobalava, Pifeleti... before that the Brooks / Moses / Siro Jr generation. Prior to that it was probably a Wests run with Sue and Tedesco.

I guess these things just go in cycles?
Ive seen alot more of Balmain in recent years for a couple of reasons, a kid we look after is in the Balmain system at the moment, and the way the draw worked out the last few season, I havent really seen much of the Wests kids.

There is likely a couple Wests kids that are good i just havent seen much of.

You don't intentionally not develop a young prospect just because you have another player currently excelling in the top grade...

No one said he would not be developed by the Tigers but unlike Brooks and Moses there is no urgency to rush the kid along as we have a very capable fullback at the moment. However, the Tigers may try him in another position if his talent warrants selection in the NRL.

Please please please... if LeKendrick Masoe and Angelo Panambalama can make first grade, I will delight in pronouncing their names each week.

What a tough start to the season for the Tigers, Penrith then Parra first 2 weeks..... the 2 powerhouses upfront!
Last year they had a dream draw, maybe this is just evening it out a bit!

The draw is huge in Ball and HM, they dont play many games and their is a gulf between the top sides and bottom sides.

Parra have a very young side as well in Ball, alot of kids from last years HM are playing. Im a chance to get to this game, we have a couple in it. If anyone watches it keep an eye out for Josh Curren and ALex Seve in the Ball, they are playing up an age, but I think they are both amazing talents

Ange is a talented kid, another Shamrocks boy...my son played cricket with him, a grade below in RL...has a tonne of pace...he is the reason I never learnt to be a scorer in cricket, having to write his name as he was always amongst the runs and wickets

Sam Kharwin is Obed's brother as I understand. Interesting to know how he compares to his brother. I see he scored the first try in this game.

Did Obed play for Balmain or the Magpies? My recollection was that he was a Magpies junior.

I don't think Obed played junior reps, for us at least.

KARWHIN OFF TO DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

STANDING 185cm tall and weighing 94kg, Obed Karwhin, 17, is no slouch on the rugby league field.
The Doonside youngster’s barnstorming style in the centre position for the under-17 Blacktown PCYC team won him selection for the Parramatta Eels’ under-17 development squad.
The training- based development program nurtures the Eels’ next crop of players for the under-18 SG Ball Cup side.

Obed has played in the centre and fullback positions for the Blacktown PCYC club for the past three years.

‘‘Not many people are the size I am,’’ he said.
‘‘In a one-on-one situation I’m the strongest and I can fend them off.’’
He originally played rugby union before making the switch to league at the age of 15.
‘‘It’s rough and fun – I’d rather that than soccer. Most Africans are into soccer,’’ he said.
‘‘I want to play for the Wests Tigers in the NRL and hopefully I can achieve that.
‘‘Maybe play State-of-Origin and represent Australia one day.’’
PCYC rugby league president Stephen Warwick said Obed was one of the club’s standout players.
‘‘He loves the physical contact and is very passionate about the game,’’ Warwick said.
‘‘He gets so into it and he wants to achieve the best he can.’’
Obed and his family migrated from Liberia in 2005. His brother Samuel scored more than 40 tries for the PCYC under-12 side last season.
