ELLIS KEEN TO PLAY ON

Gareth Ellis during his time at the Wests Tigers in 2009.

Running round on tireless legs as usual for Hull was former Wests Tigers back-rower Gareth Ellis, who is sizing up the title of Super League’s oldest player if he decides to carry on in 2018.

The 36-year-old recently returned to the field from a sternum injury that at one point was feared to call time on his career.

But out the other side of a rare injury concern, Ellis and the club are weighing up a remarkable 20th season of top flight rugby league next season.

Ellis is well known to Aussie fans from his 75 games with the Tigers between 2009 and 2012, when he was a key pillar of their pack and earned plaudits as one of the best British imports seen in Australia.

Either side of his stint Down Under, Ellis has clocked up some 300-plus games for Wakefield and Leeds, and now Hull since returning to the UK in 2013.

With 33 Test appearances for Great Britain and English teams after first debuting in 2003, Ellis has turned out in over 400 games of first grade league on both sides of the globe, and isn’t planning on slowing down just yet.

“I’ve had my moments this year when I’ve been swaying backwards and forwards but I didn’t want to make any rash decision,” Ellis said recently.

“I wanted to be back playing when I made the decision.

“I came off the field last week with a smile on my face and, as long as I can do that, I’d like to think I can keep on playing.”

300 games just in England. That's amazing.
Enjoyed watching him last weekend in the challenge cup semi, I'm not a regular super league viewer but I'm looking forward to seeing him in the final.

I loved the guy but i seem to remember he had a pretty poor year in his last season here. Might have been playing injured but I think he left at the right time.

He left at the end of 2012, A year we REALLY should have fallen over the line into the top 8, and given him one more finals swansong...We were in 4th place in round 14,Two points clear of 9th place in Round 23... then... we got Krishian Inu'ed by the dogs, Roostered (who were bottom 4 no less) and Stormed....

Such a waste of a year.

I believe he has retired....
Will take up the Football Managers role with Hull FC vacated by Motu Tony.

Gareth was by the length of a straight THE greatest player to play for the WT's
- We still haven't replaced him....
He was injured for a big part of 2012, I feel that may have given him time to think about heading home as he still had a couple years to run with us at the time.
I believe we even let him home for a few weeks while he was injured.

Has had his fair share of injuries at Hull FC since then too... But has been playing fantastic in the middle this year and the last few weeks, I think they went back to back for the cup over there. Big Gaz has certainly gone out on his own terms.

We'll still be talking about him in 20 years that's for sure....
