Probable Cyclone

Post by happy tiger » Fri 24 Mar, 2017 10:20 pm

Just a quick message to my fellow Nth Qlders to stay save with the impending cyclone

Remember if its flooded forget it

I don't know how much rain you guys have had recently in the Townsville /Cairns area and I don't wish the cyclone to hit anywhere , but I dread the damage and flooding this will do if it hits below Mackay

Many areas up here in Central Qld have had 400-500 + ml of rain since Wednesday week ago and the waterlogged ground just won't cope with more amounts of massive rainfall

I'd say we will be safe from the cyclone itself , it will strike far north of us going off current predictions /tracking

The issue will be what happens when it crosses landfall and where it heads afterwards

About 12 years ago we got the rainfall from a cyclone and it was 970 ml over 3 days (but we were in massive drought leading up to it , far different this time )

About ten years back Mullumbimby received about 11 inches (275mm) in 3 or 4 hours plus tons before and afterwards. Even the hippies looked clean.

In Townsville in 1971 the city's massive water pipes got washed away during Cyclone Althea and we could not bath for about a week. So save some water in cans.

When I first seen the topic I thought what next at the Tigers.
Hope everyone is safe in Queensland, and it doesn't wipe out the banana plantations.

Its all good mate we live with these things, it's part of life up here. We are prepared, it's only the new arrivals and tourists who are not but we look after them.
I have backup genies for my beer fridge and 1000s of gallons of fresh water. Running low on ciggies though ;-)

Things can obviously change a lot but off current predictions our game against the Cowboys in two weeks might need an alternative venue

In 1971 my lodge got destroyed and rentals shot up 100% overnight for complete rubbish so hope nobody's renting. They should have laws against profiteering.

^Methinks we need to start up a BBF thread for the stories and personal accounts of pretty much everything since 1960!

Good wishes to everyone in the cyclones' path, stay safe.

it is more productive, informative and positive than many of the flame wars that go on here over who said what and if. I brought up possible lack of drinking water, lack of accommodation and profiteering as a result of - beat that.

Next post I will bring up emergency bracing of building with threaded rods, bracing ply, triple grips, metal strapping, Prodr(?) nails.

Lets hope this cyclone speeds up a bit /lot

Travelling only at 6 kmh is a real concern ,Yasi was travelling at 31 kph

To give you some idea , Tracey was travelling at 8 kph and was the real reason for all the destruction caused , it spent so long in the strike zone
