A lot more difficult than a Union ball or a ball they have now.
60 metres or 60 yards Russell ??

I remember Killen kicking one after the bell from the other side of halfway on the side line and it sailed over the posts to win a game at the old Cumberland oval, but it is now rare as mostly teams go for the try and also everyone kicks around the corner and usually do not have the strength of a player like big Patty.

In rugby its common place, but their ball is a little easier to kick and they do get lots of practice at kicking with the rule book twice the size of a bible and every ref wanting to enforce every rule in every game
Killeen was a fantastic kicker! I'm pretty sure he would've kicked some from long range during his career. Another good kicker from the same era was Magpie Tony Ford, who I saw regularly slot goals over from halfway and beyond, with ease. Surely there is a record somewhere of who has kicked the longest goal in rugby league history? They have recorded stats for just about everything else.

And don't forget, these guys were kicking with the old leather balls that got heavier with sweat as the game wore on.

But I have found that the old leather balls when you hit them sweet go much further than the new synthetic balls

They torped easier the old leather ball

Obviously yards Happy (my error).

Still a great kick and one of only many from half way or I or 2 yards over

I vaguely remember a game when there was a penalty off the kick off for being In front of the kicker ( or something similar) then Ross Conlon places and kicks the penalty from halfway to goes 2 nil up without any play. He did something similar in an origin match.

Ross Conlon "built for origin". Shows the importance of a gun kicker in big games. Pat will be a godsend when we are in the GF.

Maybe its because my plant leg now is my crook knee , but the new balls seem harder to torp and when you do get them to torp they get too high

The older leather ball , I could get it to draw with the torp off the right foot and easily hit 40-50 plus metres but they would stay relatively low which I preferred

Richards' kick was one of the game highlights for me it showed how far on top WTs were and put the boot into the dogs not to mention the ball.

I had 3 years playing rugby in the 80 's as a fullback

Had to learn to kick long , about the only time you ran with the ball was to kick off

I wasn't really fussed on Union , didn't have a choice going to a GPS school and they prevented you playing League as well

What's the big deal about kicking a football 40-50 metres seriously ??

Hmmm that could be a tad difficult, since Happy's playing days preceded the advent of the Box Brownie and Microfilm. You might just have to take his word for it
