Laurie Daley axed as NSW State of Origin coach after review

Chris Barrett

Laurie Daley will not be offered a new contract as NSW Blues coach.

The NSW Rugby League board met on Friday and announced that Daley, whose deal expired this year, would not be offered the chance to continue in charge of the Blues.

"I have spoken with Laurie and he understands the decision. He is obviously disappointed but he has enjoyed the journey and appreciated the opportunity," NSWRL chairman George Peponis said.

"Obviously we thank Laurie for the significant contribution he has made over the past five years.

"He is a legend of the game and has done a tremendous job. He is the only New South Wales coach in the past 12 years who has won a State of Origin Series.

"We felt it was time to make a change. All aspects of the business will be looked at from coaching staff to team operations and personnel."

Daley issued a statement through the NSWRL on Friday afternoon.

"I've enjoyed my time working for New South Wales Rugby League," Daley said.

"I understand that the business is results-driven and I respect the decision of the board to go in another direction. I will always support New South Wales and I wish their team and their coach every success in the future."

Daley has presided over five Origin series during which time the Blues have only been successful on one occasion, in 2014.

The NSWRL said the board had committed to conducting an organisational overhaul and restructure, which included appointing a new coach.

Jesus, does this mean he'll be calling games again on Fox next year? It's bad enough having to deal with Blocker.

I'm kind of looking forward to reviving the pearls of wisdom thread though.

I always attributed that NSW win to my hero
Malcolm Knox: What has happened this week is a pity for the Tigers, a pity for Jason Taylor and a pity for Robbie Farah, who had achieved more than the Big Four put together but was somehow turned into collateral damage. (SMH 25-26 March, 2017)
