Heighington joins Knights

Thu 12th October, 12:05PM

The nib Newcastle Knights welcome experienced forward and two-time premiership winner Chris Heighington to the Club for season 2018.

Signed on a one-year contract, Heighington made his NRL debut playing for the West Tigers in 2003 and notched up 201 NRL games before linking with the Cronulla Sharks in 2013, to continue on to 317 NRL matches this year.

An English international since 2011, Heighington has been selected in the England squad for this year’s Rugby League World Cup in late October.

“I grew up on the Central Coast and always liked the Knights and I remember watching the 1997 and 2001 grand finals, so it just made sense,” said Heighington.

“There are some great young kids coming through the system and hopefully I can help out just as much off the field to see them grow as players.”

General Manager Football Darren Mooney said Heighington will bring valuable experience to the Club.

“Chris' professionalism and his knowledge of the game will be a great asset to the Knights,” said Mooney.

“He will be able to provide strong leadership to our young players and will be able to assist in their development both on and off the field.”

Heighington will start with the Club following his Rugby League World Cup commitments.

I thought he'd said on 2SM a while back he was giving it away?

Good luck to him either way.

Yep best of luck. I'm not sure if it's wise on either side but good luck

He wont be getting many job offers in the media, so probably best to stretch the career out as long as possible.

Watson and Ponga are all hype. The only ones i will give you are Moga and Guerra. Lillyman and Heigno will be almost 35 next year.

Good pick up by the Knights...Not many players boast over 300 games NRL experience and 2 Premierships...

Pretty good at organising Lunches too..

Watson is a real dice roll. I would take Reynolds over Watson in a second.

A shame Heighington did not want to finish in the Black, White and Orange. I think were missing experience in our front row and having someone of his caliber around would be useful. The Knights on the other hand, You don't buy 2x 35 year old's, particularly in the front (unless you have a LOT of depth). Naturally if they come really cheap, sure. But I think they are taking a big risk as is Chris playing in his 35th year.

Knights have signed a lot of unproven youngsters, old guys who are on a steep decline, injury prone players and journeymen. High risk strategy but worth it for them if most of them come into form and stay fit.

I'd argue we have done the same.
Unproven youngsters: Milne, Twal (now proven), Lolohea
Injury prone players: Reynolds, Mcqueen
Journeymen: Mcqueen, Rochow

I'm hoping ours will turn out the better pick ups, but only time will tell.

A hard worker who does the boring work week after week. Wish him all the best at the Knights.
