Mid Season Player Review

Post by The Patriot » Mon 18 Jun, 2018 4:27 pm

We've all seen enough to get a feel for the squad now. Popular opinion is we come up short in a few key areas, most noticeably centre and edge back row.

Its still early days for a few of them but id rate them like this.

Lock in -

1. Moses Mbye (fingers crossed he does more than Lolohea)
2. Corey Thompson (top 5 finishing wingers in the comp)
3.
4.
5. David Nofoaluma ( classy when right)

6.
7. Luke Brooks (solid)

8. Ben Matulino (solid)
9. Robbie Farah (much needed, length of contract?)
10. Russell Packer (solid)
11. Chris Lawrence (old dog, new tricks)
12
13.

Top 30 Players–

Alex Twal (lock, prop or bench)
Matt Eisenhuth (lock,prop,second row,bench)
Josh Reynolds (5/8 or bench utility, medical retirment lol)
Esan Marsters (not convinced is a centre, has flatlined in the role, 2nd row)
Benji Marshall 5/8 or bench utility, last season)
Liddle(hooker or bench hooker, depends on fitness and Farah)
Fonua (ISP, centre depth)
Aloia (improve or ISP)
Chee Kam (utility, ISP)
Garner (upgrade, big upside)
Gamble (hold)
Robson (upgrade, footballer)

Others –

Tui Lolohea
Elijah Taylor
Jesse Sue
Chris McQueen
Malakai Watene-Zelezniak
Robbie Rochow
JJ Felise
Pita Godinet
Tim Grant

If possible wind up the contracts on all of them and recruit better options.

Thoughts?
Its an opinion!

No Lawrence or Thompson? You're kidding yourself.

a bit harsh on marsters, makes big metres every game, and one of our only players who finds the line and causes the defence trouble...Taylor needs some games in his preferred position lock or second row to see if he can offer something in attack as we all know he can defend,Rochow i feel abit sorry for, good defender but offers little in attack.

1.Mbye
2.Thompson
3.Marsters
4.
5.
6.Reynolds
7.Brooks
8.Packer
9.
10.Twal
11.Lawrence
12.Taylor
13.Eisenhuth

14.Matulino
15.
16.
17.Liddle

I have one criticism of Marsters and that is a lot of his hit ups he just lumbers up to the line, barely looks like he breaks into a jog. Needs to run with a bit of pace and he'll cause some headaches. He's done it in parts during the season and created problems, just needs to do it on the regular.

Assume you are talking next year.
Agree to a point. Lots of good suggestions.

Only disagree on Farah (no) Liddle starting hooker 80 minutes.
I'd keep Taylor (Lock)
Your others I would see how most of them went over the remainder of this season before making a decision except for Godinet, Grant and Sue all cut.

Yeah next season for moving players on. The keepers we lock in so we can start planning our recruitment.

I took a hard line on a few players, Taylor for instance because his best days are behind him not in front of him. let someone else pay for that. Recruit a good young back rower with that money.
Its an opinion!

Rating out of ten.

1. Thompson 9/ lolohea 6
2. Nofo 7
3. Marsters 7.5(defensive issues, effort and lateral movement needs to be addressed.)
4. Fonua 6/naiqama 6.5
5. Mwz 7
6. Benji 6.5(higher 6 weeks ago, but went off the boil)
7. Brooks 8
8. Packer 6.5( not making enough metres or playing enough minutes)
9. Liddle 5/ mckillrick 5
10. Matulino 7.5
11. Lawrence 9.5 ( best on ground consistently+hardly any errors)
12. Rochow 6.5 (great first 4 games then tapered off
13. ET 6(playing out of position hasn't helped)

14. Reynolds 5 (not enough game time)
15. Ailoia 5.5(runs hard but has mistakes
16. Twal 8 ( bit of a plodder but makes no mistakes and is a great defender.)
17. Eisenhuth 7.5 ( good defender and work ethic)
18. Mck 6/sue 5/grant 5

So at this stage.

We definitely need two aggressive forwards. Were getting pushed around every week.

The one player i dont want to see picked is Grant
Cant make meters and manages to give penalties

I think Loz, Benji, Brooks and Thompson have been some consistent players

Packer always brings aggression, Tawal ever so reliable like Huth

I dont think anyone runs harder and straighter than Aloiai and Lawrence

If i had to pick my player of the year so far it would have to be Lawrence by a mile.

Hasn't Taylor gone backwards! He obviously has not handled the change in position well at all. On the plus side, he did have a hand in all of Canberra's tries....

Out of 10

1. Thompson 9 (Elastic man, evasive, whole hearted, defense not so good)/
lolohea 4 (Finished as an NRL player, lackluster, scratch head)
2. Nofo 6 (Hot n cold, more cold, can read defense like I read Mandarin)
3. Marsters 7.5 (Solid Mal Meninga type centre, has further improvement)
4. Fonua 6 (Not a centre or winger not sure what his position is no 18? Close your eyes hold your breath and hope)
/naiqama 6.5 (Quiet, solid without being great, feel we've never got the best out of him)
5. Mwz 6.5 (Shows good signs at times, just not sure)
6. Benji 6.5 (Good early, old legs and grind has found him out, past it?)
7. Brooks 8 ( Has held the team together, kicking has improved, needs support)
8. Packer 6.5 (Needs help, not the enforcer I thought he might be, disappointing)
9. Liddle 6.5 (???)/ mckillrick 5 (Tries hard, limited ability)
10. Matulino 3.5 (being generous, a pea heart)
11. Lawrence 9 ( A footballer, wholehearted)
12. Rochow 6 (Worker, plodder, not a strong ball carrier, gets dominated, very limited ability)
13. ET 4.5 (Makes 34 flops, may as well sit down when we've got the ball)

14. Reynolds 7 (Promising if he can stay on field, )
15. Ailoia 5.5 (Dynamic runner, inconsistent, tapered off)
16. Twal 8 (Solid worker/plodder, tapered off?)
17. Eisenhuth 7 (worker but plodder)
18. Mck 6 (hot n cold off bench is best)
19. Sue 5.5 (hasn't improved, scratch head)
20. Grant 6.5 (Runs hard surprised a bit but past it)

Probably echoes my thoughts. Lawrence, Twal, Brooks and Thompson are standouts.

A lot of the others are probably being scored higher to accommodate their part in the early season surge. ET gets a crap rating from me purely for his dummy half work.

Off contract end of this year:
Felise
Grant
Godinet
Marshall
Naiqama
Sue
MWZ

The only player I would keep out of that lot would be MWZ as a depth player. You know what you will get every week from this fellow and although he is no world beater, he gives 100%.
