REPORTS: Burgess offered multi-million dollar deal with the Rabbitohs

Post by Tiger_Fan18 » Mon 03 Sep, 2018 11:10 am

Joseph Moorhead - September 3, 2018 - 10:58 am

Rabbitohs star forward Sam Burgess is set to remain at the club for at least another four years, according to the Daily Telegraph.

It is understood that Burgess has been offered a contract worth more than $1 million a season, which would place him in elite company along the likes of Cameron Smith and fellow lock Jason Taumalolo.

It is also believed that the contract will include an option for Burgess to stay with the Rabbitohs past his retirement in an off-field position.

The Englishman will be 34 at the end of his contract, and if he plays consistently could finish his career with over 250 games for South Sydney. This would place him second behind his evergreen teammate John Sutton for appearances with the club. Burgess has enjoyed another stellar season with the Rabbitohs and will play a key role during their finals campaign. His signing comes at an opportune time for the club, as they gear up to face Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park this Saturday in what will undoubtedly be a huge Qualifying Final.

Burgess went off early with a hamstring scare during the Rabbitohs’ dominating Thursday night victory against the Wests Tigers, but his teammates are confident he will be ready and raring to go against the Storm.

“He’ll definitely play,” teammate Damien Cook told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I spoke to him on Friday and he said he’ll be fine.”

Very expensive long term contracts to older players is very risky practice even to a player of Sam’s caliber
