Daydreamer: footy's more fun in the sun

Sunday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval. There's nothing like it. Except maybe Saturday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval. I cannot understand why we are not playing NRL games on Saturday afternoons.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good Friday night contest but give me a Saturday afternoon game over a Saturday night contest any time.

I should confess a little bias here. For teams like mine, the Wests Tigers, the afternoon is when we can play our best football. Against Parramatta last week, the amount of ball that was thrown around and the atmosphere it created, I don't think anyone would have regarded it as boring. It just felt more electric.

We enjoy throwing the footy around and on dewy nights sometimes we just can't do that. You can lose your footing easier and it makes you think twice about offloads and throwing that extra pass. You generally get more positive footy during the day.

Look at any Sunday afternoon and compare it to the night games - they are just geared towards more positive footy. You only have to think back to last Sunday - our game was exciting and we all saw a different Canberra side against the Dragons.

I really think having one or a couple of more day games on the weekend will improve the standard of the NRL. What's wrong with Saturday arvo? A lot of kids play their sport in the morning and then the family can all head to the footy in the afternoon. I don't know why we need two games at 7.30pm when you could show all three games live on television, at 3pm, 5pm and finally 7pm.

The other aspect to think of is the fact that an afternoon at the footy is more family-friendly. The NRL always talks about providing a family sport, but are we really catering to them? A lot of our membership is made up of families so we certainly should be catering to them. In a good environment, on a nice day, when there's nothing to do in the afternoon, parents can take the kids out to the football - it's hard to do that for the 7.30 game, even the 5.30 one. I really think fans enjoy Sunday afternoons as well.

Of course, everyone enjoys Friday nights, too, with the big crowds and the great atmosphere. I've never played on a Saturday afternoon, but I'll tell you, there's nothing better than playing good dry-weather football on a Sunday afternoon, whether it be Leichhardt, Campbelltown, or anywhere the sun is shining.

I've got no doubt there's a reason why the NRL prefers to see us playing on Saturday nights rather than in the afternoon, but I also think there are some compelling reasons to make the shift back to more day games.

I prefer to play in them. If we can play day games all the way until the grand final, it will suit me.

But that's not being presumptuous. First we need to win today, at Leichhardt against Melbourne, and hopefully we will secure a home final. Having made the finals, it has certainly lifted a weight off our shoulders.

Since 2005, we seem to have been involved in a desperate scrap for the finals at this time of year, but we're a far more relaxed bunch having secured a final, our first since '05, a couple of weeks before they start. I'm thinking it will enable us to play a more relaxed style of football. We've put ourselves in a position where we don't have to chase a top-eight spot. Now we can try to finish in the top four. That's the plan.

if they want 3 games on a saturday, why they dont have 3:30pm, 5:30pm, 7:30pm is beyond me.

do people really watch at replayed game 9:30?

imagine having the boys around for a BBQ lunch time saturday, a punt on the races, and 3 games of live footy starting at 3:30pm?

I always used to like the Saturday arvo game on the ABC. What time did that start? 3?

3 oclock it was with the re emergence of saturday afternoon blockbuster afl games proving a ratings bonanza i think the rugby league should follow suit in 2012 for the new tv agreement in a win for the product over tv networks demand.

sounds good to me. being able to watch all 3 games live would be good although i would probably miss the first game sometimes if im at a nsw cup game. if perth gets back into the comp and they play a game over there at 7,30pm then us in the eastern states could watch it live at 9.30pm (perth is 2 hrs behind us arent they, or is it 3hrs behind???)
