The only way “diving” is going to be stopped if refs start penalising blatant attempts to milk it. Unfortunately the NRL has painted themselves in a corner by mandating any contact to the head whether it be a stiff arm or a fingernail to the hair warrants a penalty. Common sense was thrown out with this particular rule. They could make a complete farce of it and put in place that any player who receives a penalty for a head high must go off for a HIA. Teams would have to weigh up whether a penalty is a good compensation for the disruption the HIA would cause.
But I will say this. My favourite sport is NHL - Ice Hockey in Canada and the US. They are as tough as they come and dish it out and take it. They have an embelishment rule where if the referee thinks you milked a penalty, you go to the penalty box.
We’ve all played the game or watched long enough (and certainly the officials have) where you can get this 99% right on the field. Everyone knows when someone is milking. Daine Laurie did, So did Momorovski moments later. Its just going stupid now.
The biggest irony is DCE - Queensland longnecked goose captain calling for a ‘gentlemans agreement’ in origin not to milk stuff. He IS THE UNDISPUTED milker of all time, without peer.
Peter V lack of consultation with key stakeholders is the main issue rather than the crackdown, just like the six again rule. I guess the mid season timing was not smart either.
Peter V is a ruthless operator, with that comes good and bad. If he wants to get something done he does it, but sometimes you need to talk to the people involved
The main issue is consultation with these “key stakeholders” sometimes gets us nowhere, e.g. RLPA is very slow to move unless it means more money for their constituents.
I’m also often suspicious of the RLPA, because even though they are a key component of the NRL, they are employees of the clubs and, by proxy, the fans. You are allowed to complain about your employer and offer feedback, but when you start to think it’s your right and expectation as an employee to be consulted on all decisions - it starts to be come a joke. It’s not a democracy, I don’t get to have a 1:1 with the CEO (nor do my representatives) any time he decides to implement a change at the company.
Whilst I think PVL certainly gets some things wrong, or goes a little too hard into the contact, the reality is he is a very successful sports operator, he has runs on the board, and the NRL is in need of an overhaul. PVL did everything he could just to keep the game afloat during COVID, surpassing any other administrator in the country, and now he’s turning his attention to what were originally his key strategic pillars - growing the junior player participation, increasing engagement with female and youth viewers, increasing the “sellability” of the TV product, attempting to maintain the broadcast revenues during the downturn in free-to-air TV / rise of streaming.
And the muppets at RLPA think they need to be consulted if PVL or the ARLC want to stamp-out head contact.
It’s no different to player power at Wests Tigers vs letting the administrators just do their job and they focus on playing within the rules.
Specifically to the head-high tackles, there are plenty of accidents, but why is it so hard for players just not to make forceful contact with the head? Just because there is a lack of intent doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be rubbed out.
Going with probably at least 10 family members to watch Wests Panthers play at Purtell Park Wests, Lang Park ,Neumann Oval Valleys , Bishop Park Norths , Langlands Park Easts , Dolphin Park Redcliffe , Kougari Oval Wynnum Manly , Davies Park Souths , Corbett Park Past Brothers in the 70’s …20 c admission …daily doubles …buying your program …meeting some of the blokes the old man played with …getting the bench players to sign your autograph book …chips and chiko rolls …we had people who walked through the stands selling all these things …ice creams person …drinks person
It’s late on a Friday and time for a schooner
But the boss pops into work like some kind of loser
The clown wants to check that I haven’t clocked off
Looks like I’ll miss the 6pm kick-off
Even when I clock off, I miss the first half
My work mates hate footy, so they have a good laugh
Will Ronnie Palmers magic dust ever inspire?
I don’t care, the look on my face is full Michael Maguire
Who’s home early on a Friday night?
If you said retirees and school teachers, I reckon you’re right
The sort of people who fall asleep after a couple of shandies
Please scrap the 6pm games, Peter Vlandys.
Small story. When I was 10 years old I was the ballboy for West’s Illawarra under 18’s. Bob Fulton was in that team and I think Peter Peters was there too but not one hundred percent sure. There was also a fullback called Alan Maddalena who went to Newtown. Even back then Bob was a standout. West’s Illawarra could sure produce a good footballer. Add John Dorahy, Garry Jack and Steve Roach to name a few.
On a side note two years later I was playing for West’s but I was the ballboy for Port Kembla reserve grade ( not sure how that happened ) and one day I made a try saving tackle ( the only one in my career ) on a Port Kembla under 12 player and was noticed by a Port Kembla committee man who the next Sunday pulled me aside and sacked me for disloyalty. I tried to explain I had to play for West’s because I was in their area. My career was over done and dusted.
Do you think there might be a vacancy for a geriatric ballboy at the West’s Tigers
Changa was from Wollongong too wasn’t he?
Yes and so was Keith Barnes who will always be one of my favourite Tigers.I would love to have a goal kicker like him at the club now
Hosting all 16 NRL teams at Suncorp Stadium for Magic Round has been a recipe for success and securing it in Brisbane for yet another successful year demonstrates Queensland’s ability to host world-class sporting events, and my desire to look forward again next year.
TIGERS Roar ! 🐯
On another note, this caught my eye:
Former Origin prop Ben Ross is in Brisbane for Magic Round.
He asked a Broncos fan if he was attending the games over the weekend, however the fans response was that he couldn’t afford it. Zac Bailey jumped straight in and offered the bloke his own two tickets…
“If words could only describe his emotions thereafter,” said Ben.”
Without knowing any details, if a man and woman are having sex in a toilet cubicle, doesn’t it mean that one of them knowingly went into a toilet not designated for their gender? Is that not an issue in itself?
mate you need to be more progressive…anyone can use any toilets these days and god help you if you make a big deal out of it…🙄 🙄
yeah i hate it when chicks use the male toilet at work and leave the toilet seat down and no mess behind
the sheer audacity…
but in the interest of discussion…you’re using the trough and a female walks in does it make people feel uncomfortable? What is the etiquette? Honest question for healthy debate
Yeah if I was using the trough and a chick walked in I would feel uncomfortable. We just have like normal toilets at work though so you don’t get the shared experience of the typical male urinal.
Mate if your in a mens toilet and a chick walked in …why the hell would you feel uncomfortable ?..she walked into the MENS,what does that say…
That depends if she comes in and askes “Hows it hangen Boys” in a deep man’s voice
You never know these days
Latrine is the darling of the NRL and all the good things he does are raved about and the grubby things are over looked as thats not he’s go, it was accidental etc.
The sooner the NRL look at these players receiving infringements and say after 2 infringements in a season the next infringement and each one after that results in a game suspension.
The NRL have thrown the no punching out the front door and is letting all the crap in the back door
I like your idea about the fine Infringements… I think these punishments are no deterrent whatsoever to players on several 100k p/a
He’s looking at 3.or 4 weeks tho so cant say his grin acts are overlooked
I enjoy watching Penrith play. Cleary and especially Luai are great to watch. Liam Martin runs like a runaway truck and hits like one. Yeo is just everywhere. There is a lot to admire about them.
I know this won’t go down well but IC is smooth and you can see why his players respond to him, as did ours. It is just a pity he is not with us now.
How can you honestly say IC is smooth
More like sly .
He’s got it; our team was united and played some really good games under his coaching. The Panthers made the GF last year and are looking like they will do it again. He’s provided Blore and Laurie to us so we cannot complain he doesn’t give us a fair consideration.
He interviews well.
He’s a Wanker …
Sly operator and he himself didn’t provide Blore or Laurie … the system did …
He also interviews like a morbid stiff
Don’t hold back Hobbo, tell us how you really feel.😁
I don’t know why you’d want to blow smoke up his clacker ?
He’s a flog .
The mental movies of that will make me reach for 200ml of white.
