Yeah it was only a trial, but wasn't impressed , no stucture. The young kid Bula was very solid, Stef looks great, there was a young bloke on one wing at stages, looked good and athletic, possibly indigenous, islander ?
Think you’re thinking of Jordan Hill.

He’s Indigenous.

Turns 22 this year, so not too young, but will probably be good for the Magpies in NSW Cup.

Don’t be to worried about our middle D. Korisau is the best middle defender in the game. Don’t worry about his attack it’s his lift and drag of the one leg on tackle 1 and 2 that enabled Penrith to the win contest in the middle week in week out. He maybe added .8 to penriths line on tackle 1 and 2 , doesn’t sound like much , it’s everything in winning the ruck. Tackle recognition and what’s required when and where. Example Simpkin last night again went low on his own line, whether your run over, elbowed in the face, pushed off, smashed in the throat etc…. You can not, must not go low one out on your own line.

Just another nothing trial game this one featuring only a few guys likely to get anywhere near first grade this year. Our new recruits are also likely to take a little while to adapt to their new surroundings but there should still be a huge improvement once the new guys take the field.

Did everyone not see how rubbish Seyfarth was last night? Same old bean pole getting smashed and making a couple of metres per hitup. I don't care if he made 20 hitups, if they're not quality hitups then he's wasting everyone's time. Fainu was better.
The only reason he looked busy was because we had no experienced forwards out there, he was our oldest member of the pack! Once Klemmer, Joffa, Twal are back they all do what he does, only better. The only room there would be in our top 17 for him is if Klem, Joffa and Twally all get injured at the same time.
If he gets any offers from A-based NRL clubs he needs to take it

I don't understand the angst - the trials never have a bearing on the all-season form. For example we beat Roosters in a trial last year, lead by Luciano, and hammered Manly the year prior at Leichhardt.

Some people are saying they would have preferred to see a better hit-out as evidence of the new coaching strategy, which is fine in theory, but we have to be realistic that we are not going to see a good example of any new strategy in the first game hit-out by a bunch of kids flown to Auckland to play on a Thursday night.

I also think it's short-sighted think you can make long-term judgements about the first-grade roster based off some serious deficits in a very inexperienced trials side. For example Reilly has played zero first grade league games, Brandon Wakeham is known to be an ordinary player, Tommy Talau hasn't played a game of footy in 1.5 years. It's good they were given a run, but if you put my Grandma in the centres then any side is going to exploit that weakness, and it throws the entire team performance off.

In the trials they can put players on and off at will, so there is limited fatigue. Mentally also most players simply cannot take a game as seriously when it's a trial.

Personally I think trials are mostly about individual performances, to tell you where a player is up to. And then if the coach decides to run out his likely first-choice side (probably will see that in the final trial) then you can see if they are clicking or rusty, but that's about it.

Stefano had impactful moments but I worry about his motor, he seems to drift in and out of games.

As a team, after the first three minutes, we could not match them physically and we don't have much speed or skill. I understand this is a back up team of the squad who ran last but it is worrying how weak this squad is in terms of tackling. I don't really think back up players should be that poor. We cannot stay with teams when they play aggressively and most teams also have a more skilful backline then us.
Well luckily he won't have do all the impact this year with the pack we've got now

Most Metres vs Warriors #NRLTrial

Staines - 131 (14 runs)
Pole - 128 (12)
Utoikamanu - 127 (11)
Seyfarth - 113 (13)
James - 98 (11)
Stefano and Pole made the most impact out of those 5. Staines was ok he takes 3rd easily but don’t know who is worst out of Seyfarth and James. Seyfarth was horrible last night made a lot of simple errors while I don’t really remember seeing James on the field. If Seyfarth gets an offer from an Aussie based club he may need to take it.

I'm one of his biggest critics ...but he was ok last night .......6/10 ......

As other have said, the players who will feature in our regular 17 looked good .

As for the underperforming young lads, last night needs be treated as a lesson, getting the basics right is a must if you even want to consider your self a First Grader.
I do think Simpkin looked sharper ,however his defence needs lots of work.
I can see a pretty handy Footy player in Matamua, had a shakey start but looked more confident as the game went on.
Bula was a real surprise.I actually thought he looked better than Staines.A year in NSW cup will go a long way for a player like Bula.

He still looks so raw and I know he didn’t play a lot last year… but he turns 23 this year.

Don’t rate him at all personally.

Hope he improves, but terrible hooker at this stage.
Rua’s top 30 upgrade was a culture signing. killed it in 2022 preseason and was basically the club saying to the younger brigade that if you perform, you will be rewarded. same as Matamua and Pole’s contracts around the same time.

for what it was at the time it was a smart move. his injury has completely stunted his development and his passing off the ground is abysmal. the positive is that he’s now injury free, has two hookers ahead of him and is only on a 2 year deal which you would assume would be at minimum cost.

Rua had a shocker last night hopefully if he does play again his next game will be better. He has missed a lot of time due to that ankle injury so I’m willing to cut him a little slack since he’s been out for a while but he definitely needs to improve if he does want to play again.

He’s good for roster spots 24 to 30. He’s good in reserve grade. Could fill in for a few games in firsts if required. You don’t break the bank for him and let him walk if he gets a good offer. Fairly easy to find equivalent production at a cheap cost.

Thats my take away as well. Was pleased with Feledey and Sukkar as well as those that should come in to the top 17. The rest are reserve graders.
