Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

WTF are you talking about?
- It's in this thread...

Here's a breakdown....
It was claimed Laurie was actually a 6 (or 7) playing fullback.
Knowing this was hogwash, I referenced his entire rep career
From Ball up - Where he's played (Almost entirely) at 1.

Then it was also re-inforced from another poster that his Indigenous and Aus XIII rep coaches
- Played him on the Wing...
- Which would be strange you'd think if he was a 6 or 7 as previously claimed...

And here we are...

All we know he hasn't lived up to a full back yet.

I've seen him run it back hard plenty of times. The problem is he gets smashed. It's probably the wrong option. He needs to pick his moments better.

I'm just not sure he is going to be a longer term option.
Our kick return meters are pretty weak.
NRL.com or somewhere had our 3 worst stats and kick return meters we were either last or second last. I think 119m vs 206m from Penrith. That means we have to grind out an extra 80m per game. Now think about how poor our front row was last year at grinding forward?

Score more tries, we scored 2.5.
Don't blow close games.
Kick return meters.

^dont forget Defence for a team that concedes way too many tries.

Daine Laurie is 100% Tigers but will need to move out of Fullback. Not winger because of his height. Center, 5/8 OR bench back cover. I could see him becoming a little like Craig Wing being an ultimate cover position.

Calm down. Your post accused me of saying Laurie was a half from under 17's. I never said that.

Or maybe I read it wrong and you were telling me where the talk came from. I thought you were saying I was the one who claimed Laurie is a half

I disagree...
He played 1 in the 2018 Flegg Grandfinal (5 Seasons ago)
with Dean Blore and Brendan Hands in the halves...

The year before that (2017 In SG Ball) he was the Fullback

The year before that, He was playing Bush Footy at home.
(All online if you care to look it up)
He played the odd game at 6 with Staines at 1...
He's been a FB predominantly for years...

I'm not saying he "Can't" Play 6,
But anyone who claims he can - Or has a "memory" of him doing it.....
Is basically making sh*it up.

Seriously....
Forgot about this comment earlier. Check out the NSWCup lists for the Panthers in 2020. You’ll find Dane was 6 more often than not that year.

My point is very simple..
If indeed Laurie doesn't make it as fullback,it will most likely be because of his size,so winger wont be an option for same reason...
so 6 or 7 will be his only opportunities..apart from prop of course!D

I can see him on the wing. . Could be as good as fitzhenry . Similar qualities . I say give it a go. Was very good outside Naden in the all stars

..and what I said is that is imo his natural position based on his strengths and weaknesses in today's game
I'd like to see him have an opportunity there with coaching at some stage

I agree. I think we will go all out for a premier FB now the Moses deal has fallen through...
Has the deal fallen through though, have the Eels announced it. Paul Kent was saying that he wants 5 years which we have offered but the Eels are only offering 4.
If we nab him great we get a half who can run a team.
If we don't get him great we have a 1.3 million dollar war chest for other marquee players.

Accomplished (but now 29 year old) half entering into what is most likely his last big contract and wanting a long (5 year) deal to see him out! Eels won't budge beyond 4 (maybe because they already have some young gun in mind to eventually replace him), Tigers are offering the 5 years he wants at appreciably more money! If MM sticks to his guns and the Eels continue to play hard ball, who knows! Interesting times!

Think it's worth mentioning that in his debut season Laurie was pretty good with kick defusals.
I did previously share an article from fox which showed his 2021 stats, they were actually up there with the top fullbacks in a few areas.
The following was from May 2021 but I do know I've seen that it was ongoing until he broke his leg.

So IMO clearly he regressed whether it was from the team's form or his own lack of confidence, from coming back from injury.

He is a good player, but also an emotional player. The last thing we need is him here at 1-4 mill for 5 years and not live up to expectation. Already some are labelling him the difference to us making the eight and or not. He is a great front runner but a very different player when the going gets tough and the chips are down. Not a player to be investing that sort of money - to lift a team from the doldrums - for 5 years at the backend of his career.
