Development of spine

Across the NRL I’ve come to the realisation we have the brightest spine in the competition easily. In terms of their development how can we best make sure all players hit that ceiling of skill set and transition it into the NRL - if they do so I believe we’ll be a premiership threat in the next 5 years that’s how important there development is for this club imo.

Excluding Bula, as I believe at this rate from playing week to week NRL it’ll translate into a top 5 fullback in the league one day. However, both TDS and Fainu who are regarded as the best 6 and 9 prospect in the league is where my concern lies.

For example -

Do you believe playing TDS off the bench or giving him the full 80 mins in cup will be best for himself moving forward?

Do you also believe that playing Fainu at 6 next year come round 1 or gradually working his way into the league playing some NSW Cup first beforehand will be best for him - as this is his first season in NSW cup as I believe he’s still eligible for Flegg?

Curious on everyone’s thoughts?

Citations please.

Bula has second year syndrome ahead of him and who pray'tell is the 7 in this supposed 'brightest' spine in the competition.

Imo opinion it is much better for Dasilva to be playing a full 80 in reserve grade if he's only going to get 10 - 20 in N.R.L. As a young player he needs his hands on the ball to develop his game and work on his inadequacies. He can't do that on the bench. If he were playing 40 min every week in N.R.L then that would be perfect for him and wouldn't need to be playing in a lower grade. He needs game time somewhere 10 min off the bench will send the kid backwards.

Bula still has heaps of development to do before he can be considered amongst the best fullbacks. His work ethic, ability to learn and coaching teams skills will determine how good he can become. Although tracking well, i don't want to presume he will reach any great heights. There have been countless boom rookies that have never kicked on.
TDS needs a mix of both. Some first grade, to know what the standard is, mixed in with extra game time in Cup.
Fainu is first grade ready and the fact that he will be playing 80 every week regardless means play him in firsts.
Still need another half and for these blokes to all reach their individual potential before we can start considering them a future premiership threat.

Additionally, we aren't looking any more or less promising than the spine of many other teams.
e.g. Broncos Walsh (21), Mam (20), Mozer (19)

managing their development will be crucial to our future. having options is key.

I think that signing Sezer and Sullivan gives us the opportunity to potentially start Latu in reggies if he needs it, and then bring him up and move Sullivan to the bench and Da Silva back to Cup. there’s going to be stretches of next year where they will require time in the lower grades so ensuring the depth chart is strong is incredibly important.

I guess that depends on how we use API, it’s easy to suggest he can play 80 but he’s not getting any younger and may need a spell.
Now the question then becomes do you need a specialty 9 as backup or just someone with a good pass from dummy half( because you or I could win what they call scrums these days).
And the other thing is that if TDS plays Kof E for max minutes, when does he get peeved about not playing top grade, one season, two seasons or after 10-12 games next year.
I’m thinking that there is maybe plans at foot to utilise API differently in 24. Not sure how or where but if TDS is as good as we think then, like Bula, he needs to be in the team.
So far he’s really not shown much at all but that’s because of how they are using him.

Look at NRL women Wests Tigers team.

Are you available tomorrow morning @ Concord? You should be getting paid for this. And thanks for doing this for free on this platform. But seriously - you in the wrong job.

Is fainu 19 next year if so can’t see a problem for him playing nrl , as long as he is been monitored , as he may need a rest every now and then , but blokes like brasher and benji played when they were 17 and 18

a few so called experts (media } have said body wise yes,2 dig a club out of the mire, mentally tough enough ?

Turns 19 in May next year.

This is Nuts.

Ok TDS seems to be having strong potential. Fainu likewise strong potential.

I believe our halfback is Sezer, who would be at best the 16th best halfback in the comp. Probably 17th.

Even then, our back line is still stuffed. We can't win games if we can't defend our flanks. Every team knows now "pass to the wing" and score against the tigers.

Seriously we lost to St George when we could have put them to the bottom of the ladder.

Sure Api is probably a top 3 hooker, TDS may reach Api's potential but lets see.
Fainu and Bula are kind of guns.
It's going to take 2 years for a spine to properly "gel".

Api will be playing 80 next season so TDS should remain in NSW cup playing 60-80 mins. Build his stamina and defence at that level. Playing 10 mins off the bench isn't enough for him to develop. Over time Api will need a break which will give him increasing opportunities

I still think overall we overestimate the ability of our juniors. Many other clubs also have good juniors. Penrith, Canberra, Brisbane and many more.

We have a history of not developing our juniors well at all. Hopefully that changes now

At NRL level you definitely need a specialist; there is so much more to hooker than passing the ball from dummy half. TDS still has a lot to learn and should be playing in cup to develop his skills and adjust to the grind. He is not going to displace Api in the short term so no rush to have him sitting on the bench. He will get time to show his skills in FG around origin time.

Depending on how he develops he may become a benchie later in the year.

As for Latu, too early to make a judegement because we don't know what the 6/7 depth of the club will be. I trust that we develop him in cup and blood him during the year. That said if the cupboard is bare, and he is good enough, he could be thrown into FG providing we are able to pair him with the right half.

The one thing the club has done right.

Hiring Api, which leaves Farah and Api to mentor TDS.

At least the future looks bright at Nr9

Ok, accept my comment may have been a little too simplistic but still don’t think 9 requires a brain surgeon. Selective passing, speed off the mark and tackling all necessary so my comment was aimed at whether you needed TDS on the bench to cover a 10 -15 min API rest, or leave him to develop over 80min in KoE while utilising a suitable bench forward in first grade to cover.

They need experience around them imo
Sezer or alike. Also they only need to have minor coaching in the halves just telling them to go out and do their job . I believe the nrl in general over coaches halves
Many 2nd year syndrome happens for 2 reasons they get worked and focused on or are working on parts of their game but getting bogged down and forgetting some of what got them to where they are
