Onitoni Large to Manly

if we lose Galvin then this will be a big f up. if we keep him then it's understandable.

You would think that richo being one of the best admins wouldnt have released large unless he's 99% sure... otherwise you'd keep large for another year for sure.

and you would think richo wouldve gone to isaac moses or galvin family and say what are your intentions because we dont want to lose onitoni if you arent staying
It smacks of Tedesco and Paps all over again. The club was certain Tedesco was going to re sign and let the up and coming Paps walk. Let's hope history isn't repeating.

He got injured towards the end of the year and missed the GF and Schoolboys tournament.
His team played the grand final against a red hot Warriors and got a spanking.
You can’t compare players as first graders until they’ve played first grade. I saw him a couple of times. He is one of those players who has time. He glides around the field almost effortlessly. He’ll see plenty of top grade footy.
From all accounts though , he definitely came back to the pack this year . Could be a down year / form etc . Could be a case of a kid who was bigger stronger faster than everyone now having to adapt that not being the case .
What this does do however is really highlight that we must get the Fainu/Galvin/Luai thing right. .
Also McDonnell is the recruitment manger at manly , and is a real estate agent , with an axe to grind , who was very close with Tim sheens .
Sualiii would be the easy comparison , but he was way more dominant in junior football than Onitoni .
It will be interesting , because the knock on onitoni , from what I’ve heard is his creativity is in his running game , which is why centre and fullback were the nrl comps long term for him .
And I don’t think he wants to play either . I also can’t see a pathway to nrl , as he’s not a halfback , and Kuola and Hopoate surely have the jump on him with fullback , when turbo eventually moves to the centres himself .
It’s interesting . I heard Mcdonnell has been adamant about large to manly since he went there .

Confirmed,

Manly have secured one of the brightest young prospects in either code by snatching Onitoni Large from Wests Tigers amid heavy interest from Australian rugby.

Large has signed a three-year contract to join the Sea Eagles from next season – a player many experts in the game have described as the best young talent across either code.

Last year the Dogs snatched Alex Conti, this year the Eagles snatch Large, next year the Rorters will sntach Glavin....we develop for other clubs...may as well chuck in the towel.

Until the WTs are successful in the NRL and at least a consistent top eight club we will continue to lose players who have aspirations of making a name for themselves. It is inevitable that young players, in particular, will want to play with other quality players in winning teams and in the best clubs.
Players have a limited career in NRL and understandably don’t want to spend it continually losing in a crap environment. (Brooks is a good example).
We need to change both the reality and the perception of the club so we become a club that great players want to play at and come to.
The old sense of loyalty is no longer a thing.

He reminds me a bit of what Jai Field looked like coming through.. extreme pace and a beautiful step.. Jai has went on to make a good impact in the ESL but he did struggle a little when he hit first grade here .. the heavy contact in first grade can often “shock” the schoolboy prodigy

We are definately a damaged supporter group. While it sucks his gone there may have been nothing we could do. It's so easy to play 2k sports but the realism is player and agents will do what's best for them. The player will decide not the club.
His path is blocked by dudes id prefer to have so it is what it is

All clubs have elite juniors jump ship for greener pastures. The trouble is, and it has been said a million times, that the present system doesn’t compensate clubs who develop talent or penalise club who scavenge off other clubs. Till that is addressed it will continue to happen unchecked

If the 2 clauses in his contract were true about Tim Sheens having to remain in charge of development and a pathway having to remain open for him to be playing halfback then its just another example of how terrible our previous administration was. All i can say is thank god Richardson doesnt believe in these sorts of clauses in contracts as they are becoming very tiring.

While it's always disappointing to lose a talented junior, we can't offer a starting 5/8 position to any junior right now because we have Galvin + Latu Fainu signed in those positions.

Perhaps it would have been better to ensure Galvin signed long term first before letting him go, but we don't know what the machinations behind the scene were.

It's possible the kid simply didn't want to play with us and in that scenario, he would have left anyway. Let's be honest, we've won 3 spoons in a row.

We also can't guarantee that he is going to have the same impact in NRL as he does in the junior leagues. That aside, as a manager, player and/or parent, you are going to look at the pathway to first grade and see 2 x highly rated 20 year olds in front of you and conclude that your pathway is blocked.

Every year, there is a new crop of juniors that graduate and some of them are going to be promised first grade at other clubs. It's simply not possible to offer every decent player a shot at NRL year after year if we don't need to fill the spot.

We should just be thankful if the production line keeps churning out players of that calibre and we can build our team from within over time.

It would be interesting to know if part of the problem is our lack of spots in the top 30. I mean, we can't even find space for Sione Fainu right now, so things are tight for us until we manage to offload some players. Seems to be our biggest hurdle to our roster at this stage rather than the will to sign better players.
