Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

That's not the point, the lack of depth with a squad of 25 will leave a lot of teams struggling when injuries hit.

Isn't that what you were trying to get across, it will happen with less injuries than double digit, especially teams under the top 8.
I think the NRL involvement in the future of the ESL is to poach as many top players from that comp as possible , thus trying to fix the very apparent shortfall of 20 sides

Yeah you can't obviously use weights like they did in the 60s .....not that I'm old enough to remember that .....but I reckon playing 2 years up is the maximum that kids can deal with mentally
I would occasionally play baseball as a 12 year old in my Dads team if they were short
And even in a non contact sport it was overwhelming
Didn’t jockey Malcolm Johnston tell the story that he once scored 5 tries in a Junior rugby league game. Then mentioned he was about four years older than everyone else as he was so small.

Not a real wize investment if they plan to rape and pillage
I can't see any other reason to invest to be honest ......rugby league is a very distant 3rd in footy popularity and FTA TV is threatening to pull the pin on any coverage
The only other thought is they switch the game to a winter sport in England so players can play like they did in the 80s on short term deals to help teams during end of season / finals footy
The crowds are poor bar derby games ( ie Hull v Hull KR ) and I don't think it can be saved at a competitive level compared to soccer or rugby

If people are worried there isn't enough talent, make it a top 25 instead of top 30, that's an additional 100 players that can be utilised...
Most clubs use 27-37 players a season. How would it help to have fewer players training professionally? The game has never had more injuries.

If the NRL want more clubs they need to invest an extra 100 million in juniors development across the country

Obviously the talent pool is reduced with the inclusion of extra teams, but there could be 24 teams and there would still be 1 maybe 2 genuine top class tj elite players available for each team.
The problem is teams such as ours have a lot of trouble identifying players who are elite and end up paying elite salaries to players who are not in that category.
One player from each club should be salary cap exempt to allow a genuine elite marquee player at each club.

Like it.

Plus clubs (& players) should be incentivised & rewarded for developing their own juniors from at least having two years in U19s up.

A decent salary cap discount for clubs + a bonus (not included in cap) for players.

Clubs would invest more heavily in pathways then I’m sure & would help in some small way to counteract the tax-free lure of PNG.

Why would they want that , when it’s clear as day the new money is in international football ?
The nrl wants SL because it expands the nrl brand , gives it a footprint into Europe , and opens up new pathways for revenue .
A strong NRL Europe means next time at the negotiating table the options for diversifying revenue become exponential.
The nrl has maximised Australia . Hobart and Adelaide are the last 2 Aus cities , and no one gives a shit about nrl in Hobart , nor does the nrl care about Hobart , and Adelaide could be argued , but not more than things like a second nz team and a Ipswich corridor Brisbane team. Or even the crazy idea of a Hawaii team .
The players to fill out the nrl ,will come from Europe . But not the SL. As the nrl gains traction players will be tempted to test themselves in the “real” premier rugby competition in the world .
As it stands NRL is popular and quietly known as this , but there’s no marketing in Europe , so therefore there’s no market place share . And therefore no spot in the European zeitgeist . Buy SL, change the name , get a better broadcast deal , more interest from sponsors and investors , promote the hell out of it … and now people in France and Italy and Ireland are talking about it .so when a gun Irish or French fly half comes off contract it will be “what about the nrl … nah not the one in England the real one in Aus” .
South Africa as well . Especially with Perth .
The nrl doesn’t want to cannibalise SL. It wants to eat into rugby . And in some places like France , well especially France , return RL to its rightful place at the top.
Not sure many people know this , but English aristocracy during ww2 petitioned Hittler to outlaw RL , when they took over France , because of the rising power of RL in England , and a strong French league would be disastrous for English rugby .
Unbelievable but 💯 true story.

Apparently Brllamy is nothing like what you see in the box. He gets it out there but addresses the players personally a lot different. He can also take a joke and be wound up by the boys. Thats where Madge fails, he cant take a joke and players cant relax and be themselves
But at least they're always in the F*****g game.
