Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

We signed Papali'i when he was reigning second rower of the year. It's up to Benji to get the best out of him.

Why would Su'a come here after seeing Ice's form fall off of a cliff?
I don’t think he’s had form since he has been here. I think he had one good season at Parra and we drank the Coolaid with an unbridled enthusiasm.

Why wouldn’t he come here? Team is coming good. We played a bad game. So what?

Exactly.

We were awful and undermanned.

In the end, we were one astonishingly bad bounce away from it being 3 tries a piece.

Agree.

But some of his individual efforts, on both sides of the ball, have been absolutely atrocious for 14 months.

He is a defensive liability at some point in EVERY game.
Is there a player in a lesser team who is not guilty of missing a tackle? Unrealistic expectations placed on individual players is always going to lead to disappointment. His work rate exceeds most of our players but he is never not going to be guilty of missing tackles when we keep inviting good teams into attacking positions.
I can guarantee you every time any team gets beat good players miss tackles - even in the good sides

Of course.

Im not talking about simply missing tackles. However, he frequently has some bad ones.

He's a very poor lateral mover and has a habit of overcommiting on the inside. He frequently causes indecision for his outside men on swings that should be covered comfortably.

I don’t want to let facts get in the way, but the year after he won second rower of the year he had 13 line breaks, 10 tries and averaged 140 metres. Jaydn Su’a hasn’t got near those numbers in 10 years of NRL.

Obviously the ability is there, and if we can’t unlock it, I don’t see how we get a lesser player in the same position and see a different result.

I reckon our edge defence is much improved but it is an area where teams run attack and can catch players out. LL use to cop the same level of criticism and also played 80 mins. We just can't keep off loading FG players to teams thinking that we are going to replace them easily with someone who will be able to make up for our weaknesses.

Again, I agree.

I just think it is often a part of Ice's game that often gets overlooked and it's an area that needs a lot of improvement.

Outside of that, he was willing and busy yesterday, but again, his hands let him down.

Understandably, given personel changes, our edges were very clunky yesterday in general. Both sides.

Sorry mate don't want to get into a to and fro. To be clear don't think he will ever be the player to take us to the next level but he still offers value.

I couldn't think of anything less relevant than discussing the 3-5cm or 3/4kg differences between players when it pertains to their ability.

It's all output.

For a forward, for example -

How hard do they hit?
Do they run good lines?
Are they disciplined?
Do they have good lateral movement?
Do they have good hands?
Are they strong in the wrestle?
Do they regularly show the 1%ers?
Do they work from the inside?
Are they good talkers on the field?
Do they split defenders in contact?
Whats their offload rate?
How quick is their ptb?
What is their motor like?
Do they maintain line speed throughout?

Etc.
Yes, obviously all those are important too. But if you can get in a bigger, faster body you take that upgrade.

We're often not talking a couple of cms or kgs. Often our boys are giving up 15cms and 15kgs, plus they're not aggressive types. That's the problem. There's a reason most clubs can easily steam roll us in attack and defence. They're bigger and more aggressive.

If you can choose between big Tino or Tapine up front vs Joffa or Tumeth and Inglis at the back or Laurie I certainly know which players I'd target.

Over the last

Yeh, ok.

Galvin, Bateman and Samuela all missing from our top 17.

Two of those have been among our best and a big part of our early season form and the other is the vice captain, who, despite a slow start, is one of the first picked and tightens up his edge.
It’s no excuse for being as limp as we were, injuries happen. You can’t turn to water.

Undermanned? We only had two out. One of which is an 18 year old kid.
We actually had 12 out
Galvin
Bateman
Fainu x3
Naden
TDS
Toa
Doueihi
Simpkin

And I think a couple of other fringe Kit or Sukkar were ruled out too. Given we don't exactly have the greatest squad in the first place missing a third of our top 30 is just too much, not enough to choose from

I didn't say it was.

I LITERALLY said we were awful AND
undermanned.

As in; in addition to missing some key players, we were also awful.

Do you just read every third word people write or what?

Put down the keyboard for the night.

It would be nice to think they should maintain their consistency, even in the absence of some players but the team just isn’t developed or experienced enough to cover for weaknesses like that. Even having Galvin out alone has been a massive blow. Yes he’s 18, but he’s also a natural talent and adds a lot to the team, even at this point in his career. He’s actually a really good defender too, and having Sullivan there in his place is a major setback. Add in a couple of the other guys that were out and it’s just too much for the team to overcome at this point in time.

Might be an unpopular opinion but if we could get an adequate trade i would move Ice on. From moment one when he signed with us he's be disinterested, we seemed to have the warriors version not the Parra one.
I know he makes a lot of tackles at times 48 yesterday someone quoted but he also has some horrendous misses or efforts highlighted in the Sua try there's quite a few of those ive seen him attempt or not attempt.
He rarely makes an impact in attack perhaps its the way we use him vs his Parra days, but i really think he doesn't give a toss about being here.
I think as soon as he's able he'll probably sign elsewhere anyway so we may as well try and get something in return for him the bloke is treading water here.
If we don't get someone to team with him to set him up and bring out his best as an attacking player, he most probably will move on C_T (y)

It's really quite telling the fact a 2 game rookie that is destined for stardom that were lucky enough to have has had such an effect on our football for the fortnite he's been suspended.
Normally wouldn't rate a blip, but this is like when Johns was missing at the Knights... A certain loss for them
