English legend Tommy Makinson will move to Australia in 2027, joining an NRL club's coaching staff.
The club he will join is yet to be announced, but he revealed on Sky Sports in England after the final game of his Super League season with the Catalans Dragons that he has work lined up with an NRL club, and it would be announced in due course.
āI'm heading to Australia in November and doing a few bits. That will all come out soon,ā Makinson said.
āI'm really proud of what I've got lined up, so I'm really excited. I aren't playing in the NRL, that's for sure! But hopefully I'll be doing some good work down there with some good people over there.. so it should be good.ā
Makinson, now 34 years of age, retires from elite rugby league with 386 professional games under his belt, although has never been part of the NRL.
He began his career way back in 2011 at St Helens, playing 348 games for the Saints.
He was at the club until 2024, although had short loan spells in 2013 at Whitehaven and Rochdale.
He moved to Catalans in 2025 where he has played the final two years of his career, racking up another 36 games.
His list of accolades is long, and includes 13 Tests for England, win the Golden Boot award for the best player in the world in 2018, and win every trophy that there was to offer in the English game.
Never playing in the NRL evidently now won't count against him as he begins his post-playing journey, with the Saints legend who played in the 2021 World Cup bringing plenty of experience down under.
The former Super League team of the year player is expected to find a role where he works specifically withoutside backs, having played his entire career at either fullback or wing where he has scored 226 tries across his 386 professional games.

Just like the last 3 years we keep hearing how the club has identified Benji needs more help around him like its some great revelation. The club just repeats the same rhetoric constantly.

Heās had a great career, but that doesnāt mean he can coach at the age of 34.
Weāre not a club that can afford to bring in any more rookie coaches. There are essential psychological nuances to managing players, especially when youāre dealing with alpha personalities. That takes time and experience.
I can imagine one of the Fainu brothers asking him if he likes drill rap on his first day, and his reply would be, āI wrapped my dadās drill last Christmas.ā

Richo was the pitbull in the scrap yard. He was the hard voice that kept everyone inline. Remember when we were playing the spoonbowl for our last wooden spoon against Parramatta, we were getting thumped and in the players box DaSilva and i think one of the Fainus and a few other injired players were having a laugh and Richo ripped them a new one about laughing while we were about to be given a wooden spoon. He sprayed them monumentally infront of all the fans at the ground to see. Thats Richo thats what our club has never had. A king who rules with an iron fist. Make no mistake if HBG didnt screw the joint and Richo was still here, making finals iv no idea, but theres no way our season implodes as bad as it did. Never forget when he first go to the Tigers and told the players through the media, any injured player will be getting surgury in the offseason instead of playing rep footy then comong back for surgery. Clint Newton told him he couldnt do that, Richo shot back he can while its the club paying their salaries. Richo didnt muck about. We needed him.

Richo inherited Benji. I think Richoās approach would have been beneficial for two reasons.
1 - Benji has the support structure and assistants he is comfortable with, and it gives the coach adequate power and control which has always been a criticism at this club.
2 - If it fails its all falls on Benjiās shoulders and thereās no excuse.
I donāt think Richo would have made a panicked and illogical decision to extend Benji. Thatās all on HBG. Benji being appointed in the first place is on HBG as well along with Pascoe and that flog Hagipantelis.
