4 clubs in shambles

ONE-quarter of the NRL’s club are in a shambles.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal exactly how badly four clubs - Brisbane, Wests Tigers, St George Illawarra and Parramatta - have performed this season.

With two rounds remaining, the winning stats are damning. They are:

* Brisbane is confronting its worst season in 26 years.

* Wests Tigers is facings its equal poorest season in 14 years.

* St George Illawarra is looking at its worst year in 15 years.

* Parramatta is likely to have its worst season in 18 years.

The Broncos have won just nine games this year, a horror season compared to the lofty standards they have set since the club’s 1988 debut.

The Tigers have won seven games, the Dragons six matches, Parramatta way back on only four wins.

The disastrous results are a deep concern for the NRL, who pride themselves on having a tough, even competition through the season’s 30 weeks.

Wests Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer said his club’s horror injury toll earlier this season was a key factor.

"Our injury toll has been well documented," Mayer said.

"But on a positive, that has given us the chance to blood a lot of young kids and we are really confident about our future."

Asked how fans would rate the season, Mayer said: "It’s amazing how 24 rounds can almost be forgotten after last week’s match where a range of our kids were on display.

"Many fans are looking forward to 2014 with anticipation."

After a humiliating 64-4 loss to Melbourne last Sunday, Stuart said: "It’s been a tough season for all involved and it’s not about getting angry.

"I feel sorry for some players who were out there playing today because they didn’t deserve that. Some just weren’t there."

Parramatta’s season, on and off the field, has been terrible.

The Eels have though recruited Nathan Peats, Lee Mossop, Justin Hunt, Will Hopoate and Corey Norman for next season.

Parramatta are also confronting speculation Stuart may head to Canberra and replace sacked David Furner.

However Stuart’s manager John Fordham said: "We are not in negotiation with the Canberra Raiders.

"The rumour mill says we are … the rumour mill is wrong."

This is the Eels’ worst season since the club won only three games back in 1995.

The Dragons have also crashed again this year. This from the team which won the 2010 grand final.

St George Illawarra winger Brett Morris said his side desperately wanted to finish the season strongly.

"The focus for the entire team approaching these final two rounds is playing to the standards that we all know we are capable of on the field," Morris said.

“We have commenced our training for the match against Parramatta and know they will be wanting to farewell their own fans with a win on Monday night.”

Brisbane was boosted yesterday with the signing of star Canterbury full-back Ben Barba.

The Broncos will though need more than just Barba to crawl from the bottom into the finals next season.

4 for them - 3 for me.

Great work Telegraph…no wonder they are hopeless, they can't even tell left from right.

I have to say given our roster, the coaching and recruiting fiasco from lat yr and the injuries, i'd consider winning 7 games this yr as par. Anyone with higher expectations then that were kidding themselves.

This and also how quickly everyone forgets our horror injury run this year.

I have it on good information that tomorrow the daily telegraph will be able to confirm who the top 4 teams on the ladder are. Not sure how any of the other NRL media can compete with such journalism and inside information.
(removes tongue from cheek).

Compared to the Melbourne media coverage of the Essendon saga throughout this year the Daily Telegraph has been relatively quiet with its coverage of similar problems involving one particular NRL team.

They change their minds a lot these league 'experts' at the tabloids

I can remember reading an article in late 200's about how absolutely fantastic the NRL was and Penrith were used as an example.
Spooners in 2001 and 2007\. Premiers in 2003\. This was justification of the salary cap and evenness of the comp.

Now they say that StGI is a 'shambles' because in 2010 they won the lot but 3 years later are battling.

It is the ebb and flow of professional sport.

I can reveal that Souths and the Roosters are at the top of the table by the way.

Doggies and roosters have both recently won spoons and are now flying pretty high

I can see us, dragons and parra improving. Probably not all 3, but all of us have the potential

The AFL is worse, they've got a bunch of teams with 3-4 wins only, right? GWS, Melbourne, st kilda, Gold Coast?

I'd say the comp is no more uneven than previous years, maybee marginally. With upsets from the Dragons and Tigers, also the warriors and panthers making massive surges midway.

The problem with the season has been poor referreeing which has made it near impossible to change the momenutm of the game within a half. That's why there have been so many scoreless halves.
