A Thought Struck Me About The AFL...

It has been able to do the whole national expansion thing and sustain it, unlike what happened with rugby league in the aftermath of the Super League war. So was it just a question of timing?

Simply a matter of $$$$$

RL blew most every cent it had in court battles. After that the stakeholders were also media conglomerates and as such TV money was low.

AFL had the coffers and were willing to wear decades of losses for the Lions & Swans to grab a foothold

It took the A League a while to figure it out but they were super successful with the Wanderers. The NRL did well with the Titans. The AFL have sucked with their last two expansions. Both the Suns and Giants have been terrible on the field and the crowds for the Giants makes the local U8s netball comp look like the Superbowl.

Expansion was going well for rugby league for a fair while - bringing in the Raiders, Knights, Broncos, Steelers, Warriors, … But then the Super League war came along, player salaries sky rocketed, coffers were drained and we needed to make a lot of cuts. Teams like the Western Reds could have survived if they weren't thrown on the scrap heap.

In the last 15 years, the NRL has largely been in a holding pattern, trying to heal the wounds of the Super League war. Now that we have a bit of cash behind us, hopefully we can start to grow again!

coffers are definitely full now

smith turned a small loss into a multimillion dollar profit in 1 year which is likely to increase next year and build up the future fund
