Achilles injury / Recovery time

Hey there folks

So I had my worst fears confirmed yesterday that I have a complete rupture of the Achilles’ tendon on my left foot, 7.5cm from the distal insertion.

I am booked in for surgery next Wednesday by chance so it is a quick turn around, but I’m just wondering if many or any people on here have had similar injuries and what is the recovery like?

Probably the most pain I’ve ever experienced in any injury to be honest lol

Being the equivalent of a draft horse I have no idea. But from what I understand they are like hamstring injuries and you need to manage them in the future after they heal.

Ouch! A couple of guys whom I work with have ruptured their achilles - count on a 6 month recovery to getting back to running - you will be in a cast for 6-8 weeks post surgery, then the rehab starts - you should be walking ok after 3 months but building up the strength in it properly will take additional time.

You might be a quick healer which could shave a month off.

My wife ruptured hers 5 months ago playing tennis. She also had surgery spent 2 nights in hospital. She spent one month in a cast, one to two months in a boot. Then the rehab started. So after 5 months she is walking with a slight limp, but has no issues walking up and down hills and steps. It is a long haul recovery so our advice is don't rush or over do things.

Yeah the surgeon said I can pretty much count out running / any type of sport for a solid 3-6 months post op.

Apparently rehab starts 3 weeks after surgery so I’m assuming light walking won’t be too far after that

Ouch but thanks for the recap! Interesting the physios and surgeons I spoke to drew out a smaller timeframe for recovery but I am not sure if that is because I am on the younger side or not (mid 20’s)

Do you know roughly what the procedure was for the surgery? IE was it a graft or did they just reattach the tendon?

Good luck speed2burn. Took me a good 6 months but had a full recovery with no issues in later life. Never noticed any reduction in speed but I wasn’t what you’d call flash to start with. Worst injury I had.
Work through the rehab and you should have a good recovery.
All the best.

happened to my mate early 30's took about 5 months to recover fully and has been good for 10 years and he plays plenty of tennis and golf

Thanks for the good spirits mate. Glad to hear you didn’t have any problems later in life, that is my main concern being so involved in fitness and working a physically demanding job . Some time off and just let the recovery do it’s thing is all I need for the time being

They re-attached the tendon with stitches. Three small cuts, very neat procedure. Our Physio also ruptured his in his late 20's and he took 6-9 months to 'fully' recover and even a few years after he still restricted with the affected leg i.e heel raises etc. My wife is really fit and our major issue was to slow her down with the recovery process as she was super keen to get active again.

I partially ruptured mine 7 years ago, no surgery, in a cast for 2 months, boot for 2 months, much longer recovery process, my calf is noticably smaller due to cast/boot. So surgery is the way to go.

Good luck, but don't rush it mate 🙂

Unfortunately this was my 1st major injury .......mine didn;t heal properly and somehow got a minor twist and had to get redetached and reattached ...cost me 2 years of footy when I was 18-19 and had just broken into top grade footy ......reckon I lost around 5-6 tenths over the 100

Things have obviously changed a lot since the mid 80's ...but it was a season ender back then .....

Rehab was a killer 1st time round ....

Hope it all goes well ...if you want to yack about it PM me .....it's a long road and as the Drs have probably said the key is staying patient and trying to not overdoing it ......

Functionally, you should expect strength to return at around the 6 month mark with good adherence to rehab protocols. Range, confidence, altered gait and force absorption can take longer, depending on a number of factors, including the nature of the rupture. The fact that it's distal insertion over musculotendonous junction is less complicated, which is good.

Find a great physio and do exactly as they say and you should be sweet. Best of luck, mate.

That’s the way speed. I should have mentioned that I did mine some 40 years ago. Young fella like you should have a good recovery. I did some distance running after footy and never had any issues.

LOL thanks guys. I was once called a fat old prop by an opposing winger. That’s how I got the nick name.
