ASIAN CUP

May I also say that while I don't hold anything against our most talented players venturing offshore to be paid what they are worth, it's a little odd to hear our anthem being sung by a national side with a distinct English accent.

Defense will be the key for the Aussies. Even with Schwarzer away from the net we had two men back to cover the net.

We will get beaten up the middle all night as we are too big, too old and too slow. Only way to get forward is to get it down the sides via Holman/Emerton and McKay.

If we host the 2015 Asian Cup well then do you think that will help us winning a bid for hosting the World Cup?

We are hosting in 2015 for the Asian Cup, and we were completely shafted by the Asian bloc in the 2022 bid. The next likely opportunity or us is 2034 as a south American nation then European nation will get their bid then we will probably bid against china, India, the USA again and possibly a joint bid by south Korea and Japan in 2034\. I doubt we will see a World Cup hit our shores until you and I are well into our seventies or eighties if were lucky.

That's what annoys me about the Asian bloc. The middle eastern countries have great political clout but their countries have slim to bugger all interest in football!!

Both teams have had good chances to score though.

Still 0-0 after 89 minutes.

Bloody extra-time and still 0-0! I made a coffee and a chicken sandwich in the break to keep me awake! CB what do you think our chances are if it goes to a penalty shootout? 50%?

We've blown plenty of chances. Kewell is not a striker!

In all honesty, with kruse on now, perhaps a 50-50 chance of penalties. Before Kewell went off I would have guaranteed a penalty shootout.

Socceroos simple problem: we can't finish. If we had strikers that matched our backs we'd be world beaters!!!

Japan scored in extra-time. 1-0\. Only about 7 mins left in extra-time. We need a bloody goal! Lucky it's not golden goal.

Oh well we lost 1-0\. Still a good effort to get to the final I guess.

This, we had 2 makeshift strikers for the whole tournament, and pretty much only played them there. Kennedy probably would've been one of the strikers had he not been injured, but we definitely are lacking in that department.

We didn't seem to have a problem finishing when we beat Uzbekistan 6-0 in the semi-final.

Uzbekistan are in a completely different class to Japan. The only Asian teams that should really worry us are Japan, South Korea and Iran (a few others can probably hang with us, but we should eventually beat), the rest we should be beat comfortably on a regular basis. Watch the games again Iraq, Japan and Bahrain, we had millions of chances in all of them, but put a total of 2 goals on the board across all 3 games (5 and a half hours of football). We did it all through the Verbeek era too, seemed to do just enough against the lesser Asian teams, and seemed happy to beat them all 1-0.

I know Japan is better than Uzbekistan but I though Uzbekistan must be ok if they made the semi-final.

They had a pretty easy group (Qatar, China and Kuwait) followed up by a QF against Jordan. They didn't play a decent side until the semis. They did well to make it that far, but they are hardly a heavyweight even among the Asian countries.
