Banish Cooper from Origin

Officials have called on NSW selectors to ban Matt Cooper from State of Origin after he again withdrew from the annual City-Country clash - only to be named for St George Illawarra.
>
Cooper has been ruled out of the fixture five times due to injury, but on three occasions he has played for the Dragons the night after the City-Country match. Country officials on Tuesday night labelled Cooper a disgrace and banned him from future Country teams.
>
They also called for him to be ignored by the NSW selectors after learning he will line up for the Dragons this weekend despite withdrawing from the Country Origin side through injury.
>
"While ever I'm in charge, he will never play for Country again," Country chairman Jock Colley said.
>
"As far as I'm concerned, his attitude stinks and if he is in line for NSW selection in a few weeks time, he should be barred from that as well."
>
It it understood the Country selectors drew a line through Cooper before the team announcement after coach Laurie Daley took a call from Dragons coach Wayne Bennett on Sunday, informing him Cooper had picked up a calf injury against the Sharks and would not pass a medical the next day.
>
He and injured Dragons teammate Beau Scott had been Country's first-choice centres to meet City Origin on Friday night in Port Macquarie.
>
Instead of playing in the NSW Blues' selection trial, Cooper will be watching the game on television as he prepares for the Dragons clash with Manly just 24 hours later.
>
On learning of his club selection, Colley exploded. "A bloke shouldn't be surprised given his history but it really is a disgrace," he said.
>
"You look at the reaction of guys like young (Jamal) Idris and (Josh) Dugan and even veterans Brett Kimmorley and big Willie, when they came into camp, and you just shake your head at Cooper's.
>
"He's got plenty of form for it hasn't he."
>
It is hardly surprising Country's patience with Cooper has run out.
>
He has a history of thumbing his nose at the annual representative game and, according to officials, too often to be a coincidence.
>
Since 2005 he has been ruled out of the clash with City five times due to injury.
>
Three times - in 2005, 2007 and 2009 - he played with the Dragons the next night and scored try doubles in two of those club games.

Thoughts?

Well they can't really do anyhting about it now if it's been going on since 05 can they. If he was a fringe player they would but Cooper is Daley's love child so it will never happen.

Don't blame him, city country is a waste of time.
If they use the game to pick potential up and coming NSW origin players out of then fair enough, but if so why would you pick a player like Cooper when he has basically cemented a spot in the side for a while now.
If it's just a rep game where they simply want the best from the city against the best of the country and the chance for the NRL to take the game to the bush then fair enough also, but it probably means more to the younger players playing in their first rep game than it does for a guy thats played in a few origin series already. It shouldn't effect his origin chances imo.

Cooper should be proud about playing another rep game. Heaps of players would be very happy playing in the City VS Country game.

The way I see it, Jamie Lyon has been allowed to dictate whether he is available or not for origin year after year, so why can't Cooper do the same? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Why would you want to select someone whose heart isn't in it anyway? I'm sure they'll find someone with a bit more passion to represent Country.

Yeah bugger him - this arrogant approach to a rep game should not be rewarded…from Lyon or Cooper.

In fact Lyon is my most hated player for the way he has treated the game over the years. I cant believe he still gets selected for Origin or the Aussies. Cooper needs to pull his head in, 5 years in a row is utter BS.

One place that the Blues are oozing talent is in the centres: Lawrence, Jennings, Scott, Reddy…

Cooper is selected because he is one of the best defensive centres in the game. Lawrence is a great defender + he can score tries.

In my opinion he shouldve been banished years ago.

Like how Ennis was tagged along by Kimmorley, I think Cooper was tagged along by Gasnier and therefore over rated.

It doesn't have to be a BS game though. Why do they make it that? They can have NSW's 40 or so best players playing on one night, either in the test or city country, a perfect origin trial, but instead they pick players like Kimmorley (who surely will never, ever be selected in a blues jersey again), has beens like A Minichello and then young guns who do perform in the game get ignored anyway. Opportunity wasted.
