The Sauce: Barry OāFarrell forgets state governmentās $10m for Leichhardt Oval
Barry OāFarrellās monumental Leichhardt Oval blunder.
West Tigers interim chairman Barry OāFarrell needs all the friends he can get.
With his beloved grounds in dire straits, the former Liberal premier was quick to welcome a $40 million joint funding offer to save the iconic sports ground.
At a press conference held last week, he thanked the federal government for its $20 million contribution and also name-checked Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne for the $10 million thrown his way by the local council.
But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese gasped when BOF took to the mic to take a dig at the Minns government for not coming to the party.
āWe made clear in March that we will be putting in place a stadium plan for the future years by the end of this month,ā BOF said.
A Leichhardt Oval rescue package of $40m has been funded by all three levels of government.
āThis decision makes it much easier to put that plan together and to guarantee the future of games here at Leichhardt Oval.ā
Asked by a journalist if this meant BOF would play more fixtures at the Oval, he let rip.
āWhen the Board makes that decision, weāll make that announcement,ā he said.
āBut it certainly makes it easier.
āIt wouldnāt have made it easier if the decision hadnāt been here.
āAnd Iām an optimist and Iām optimistic about the state government also eventually putting some money as well.ā
Before BOF had left the mic, Albo could be heard yelling āthey areā in the background, as Sport Minister Steve Kamper stood nearby looking clearly annoyed that the NSW governmentās contribution of $10 million had been overlooked.
BOF probably shouldnāt expect any more from the State any time soon.
