Can't access the article on dt site. From the first line though, it says..

Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire wants Benji Marshall back next season. Marshall reckons he could play on, too. But he won't commit just yet.

marshall mentioned it in the pressconference

there is a lot of factors that he has to consider, e.g. form, body and family

I would still suggest the Board said, “you know this guy, go offer him x amount of dollars, tell him he can bring his son to the Tigers etc. on our behalf and do your best”.
But no - the board just hands it’s power over to a CEO - yeah! right.

Usually what happens in these situations would be that the board would charge the ceo with finding the coach. The CEO would run the recruitment process and would then go to the board with a recommendation, the board would then either accept or reject that recommendation.

I find it funny, that people on here hate on Greenburg for the NRL's decisions against the Wests Tigers but defend Pascoe by using the board as cover.

What happens in most organisations is that the board sets strategic direction and it is the CEO's role to implement that direction!

My personal issue with Greenberg is it feels as if the Tigers are being railroaded.
You only need to look at WT timeline of events in the past 3 years to realise we seem to have a different set of rules as other teams. (The very fact an anti-poaching rule was implemented subsequent to Panthers poaching is the best example I can think of.)
I know it was an emotionally charged week for us, but it honestly feels like the club is dying.

The funny thing for me is that we will probably end up with Gus in charge of the NRL anyway. The man is as calculated as Bobby Fischer. You only need to look at how the Panthers situation ended - he's even secured a 10 year origin career for their star player, with an added bonus of being coached by an Immortal because his father can't coach him.

But according to some on here the CEO isn't responsible for any decision making, so wouldn't that be the boards fault?

Cochise : "What happens in most organisations is that the board sets strategic direction and it is the CEO’s role to implement that direction!"

So isn't that the Board's decision? - the CEO is only carrying out their direct orders.

i.e. the CEO isn't responsible.

No the CEO's role is to make decisions to unsure the strategic directions are met! Do you think they get paid $100000's just do follow directions?

In the case you are talking about, the CEO would have conducted the recruitment process, chose the coach and then went to the board to get his decision approved. In 99% of cases the board would accept his decision and then hold him responsible if it doesn't work out.

Well I would say it is just as much their fault as his.

"Yes, we think you are right, go ahead" but if it doesn't work out then "we would say that you were wrong and sack you"

On a hiding to nothing I'd say.

That is the role of the CEO, its not like the board is going to take responsibility themselves. The day to day running of the club is 100% the CEO's responsibility, the board is only there to set the direction, the CEO has to implement it!
