The Australian Power and Gas Balmain Ryde-Eastwood Tigers have recorded their first victory of 2011 with a resounding 36-22 win over sister club the Wests Magpies at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday.

The Tigers got off to a superb start with centre Jake Clarke crossing out wide after 4 minutes finishing off a slick backline movement. Fullback Jake Mullaney didn't convert & the score was 4-0.

3 minutes later Tigers' winger Sam Latu scored in the left hand corner collecting a great Mullaney grubber kick that bounced beautifully for him, all the result of Wests' kicking out on the full from the restart. Mullaney couldn't convert & they led 8-0.

3 minutes later Mullaney touched down exactly where he wanted, right next to the posts, taking advantage of some strong forwards' runs close to the line. Five eighth Sean Meaney converted to extend the lead to 14-0.

Halfway through the half Tigers' hooker George Ndaira scored under the posts after front rower Junior Moors popped a terrific ball on the last tackle to Mullaney trailing through in support on halfway & he made 30m then drew the fullback before putting Ndaira into the clear. Meaney's conversion took the score to 20-0.

With 17 minutes to go Wests' replacement Michael Stolk crossed near the left hand post after they showed great skill to keep the ball alive on the last tackle & eventually wait for a gap to appear for Stolk to plunge over. Halfback Rhys Lenarduzzi didn't convert & the score was 20-4.

With 8 minutes remaining Wests' centre Josh Toole scored out wide, getting in between his opposite centre & winger & slicing through. Lenarduzzi's conversion closed the gap to 20-10.

3 minutes before half time Latu notched his double in the same corner finishing off another great backline movement involving Meaney & Clarke. Meaney didn't convert & at half time the Tigers were in control at 24-10.

Wests got themselves back into the game when centre Andrew Everingham crossed out wide after 8 minutes, running a great inside line down the left hand side then showing strength to drag 2 defenders over the line with him. Lenarduzzi added the extras to make the score 24-16.

4 minutes later Toole notched his own double out wide running a good support into the gap off a neat pass from five eighth Ben Jeffery. Lenarduzzi converted to bring the Magpies right into contention at 24-22.

7 minutes later Mullaney became the 3rd player to grab a double when he took advantage of the pressure from 2 repeat sets down Wests' end & they cracked wide open for him to cross out wide. Meaney converted to put the Tigers out to 30-22.

With 10 minutes remaining Tigers' centre Matt Ryan scored near the left hand post after the Magpies turned the ball over 30m out from their line & quick ball movement from lock Matt Hyland onto Ryan saw him scoot down the left hand touchline as he did on numerous occasions last season, then cross & improve the position. Meaney comfortably added the extras & with no further scoring the Tigers were deserved winners at full time 36-22.

It was a welcome return to form for the Tigers who have had a lacklustre start to 2011 that will hopefully bring some confidence to the team as they navigate the next few rounds.

Next week the team returns to Leichhardt Oval to take on the North Sydney Bears in what should be an entertaining clash. Be there on Sunday 17 April for kickoff at 3pm to cheer the boys onto another victory. See you there!
