Canberra Raider Josh Dugan to face court charged with driving at more than 45km/h over the speed limit

THE NRL's most exciting young player, Canberra Raiders fullback Josh Dugan, is renowned for his blistering speed on the footy field.

And he's a tearaway on our roads as well, according to Canberra police, who charged him with driving at more than 45km/h over the speed limit.

Dugan will appear in ACT Magistrates Court next week to face charges of high-range speeding and driving while suspended.

The Daily Telegraph understands police will allege he was travelling at more than 105km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The NRL All Stars fullback pleaded not guilty to both charges from August last year that the Canberra Raiders chose to keep under wraps - not even informing the NRL as most clubs do out of courtesy when police charges are laid against their players.

They also organised his legal representation for the hearing on Thursday next week.

Dugan declined to comment, even through his manager Paul Sutton when approached by The Daily Telegraph last night.

"I understand Josh wasn't aware he was suspended at the time this happened," Sutton said.

"And I'm told the speed was not recorded by a camera but by a police vehicle following.

"This is why he's pleading not guilty to both charges," he said.

The boom fullback is one of the NRL's hottest properties.

The Canterbury Bulldogs, Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra are all chasing his signature for next year's season.

Sources in the national capital have indicated that he is close to rejecting the offers and signing a new deal with the Raiders.

What is it with sporting celebrities and speeding lately wonder whether Dugan might look to play in France.

Does anyone else feel like he will end up similar to Todd carney?

"The NRL's most exciting young prospect". Big call.

He is one of them without a doubt, getting into crap like this will only distract him and hamper his development.

The scoop was very close…good one wacko.

Bar Shaun Johnson, I can't say there'd be anyone else ahead of him… That's of course my personal opinion.

A word of warning to Josh though, don't dare crack a joke at your hearing, if a DT muppet is around you'll be branded arrogant.

I guess it was the certainty of rothfields comment that made me raise my eyebrows. That and the fact that Dugans probably gone past "prospect" now, given he's played for state.

high range speeding and drive whilst suspended.
there are three offences here
High Range relates to Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol (PCA) you only get charged with this if you return a reading of 0.150 or higher.
Speeding,( could be speed dangerous- driving in a speed that is dangerous to the public.)
Drive whilst suspended. if he claims he did not know, and has not changed his address, it is shown that the relevant traffic authority posted a letter to his address, **_then he is deemed to have been informed_.**

Huh? There are two offences:
1 - High range speeding (i.e. over 45 kph)
2 - Driving while suspended

And he's clearly trying to use technicalities to get off both. Even if it wasn't measured you'd hope a copper can tell whether a guy is doing 60 or 105\. The second offence will come down to the plausibility of his excuse. This "it got lost in the mail" line won't wash. You don't suddenly notice you've lost all your points, your license gets suspended because you carry on like a pork chop over an extended period. And it doesn't matter if you move - it is your responsibility to tell the authorities you've moved.

Dead right Yoss.

DCE, Foran, Yow Yeh, Alex Glenn, Widdop off the top of my head are equally good prospects, Im sure there is others as well.

If the rumour is true he is about to pen a $1.3M 2 year deal, I'd say he will earn a new title of "NRL's Most Over Paid Player"…

As soon as I saw **_high range_**,in the article, automatically I thought of high range PCA.
If he was caught as described, am a bit suprised its not, Drive in a speed dangerous to public, or Drive in a manner dangerous to public.
with a back up charge of exceed speed limit.
As for the speed check via police vehicle.
If a vehicle is used that does not have an approved calibrated speedo, with certificates for most recent two calibrations, there could be doubt placed upon the reading displayed.
interesting to see how this pans out
pm me if need be

AFAIK there was no speed radar involved at all - the officer made a visual assessment based on the speed he was going. There is no PCA charge involved at all. We'd have heard a stack more about it if there was.

As it stands he's only up for High range speeding and driving unlicensed. Should get a longer disqual for the first (I'm assuming ACT doesn't have anti-hoon laws). The guy sounds like a peanut with little regard to others in the community - if he gets caught behind the wheel again he's starting to look down the barrel of a GBB or Community Service.
