Car/bike batteries

Is anyone out there a mechanic?

So my motorcycle's battery was starting to go flat after just a few days sitting idle. After pulling out the battery (it's only two years old) I found that the water levels in it were below the "MIN" line. I went and bought some distilled water and filled it up to the "MAX" line then let it charge for a bit.

Should this be enough to fix the problem?

for safety reasons: rule of thumb is, always disconnect the earth lead from your battery.

will be a good idea to use a battery charger, for a few hours each day over a couple of days.
this way it can be done as a " trickle charge", this will give the battery the deep cycle charge it needs.
fully charged 12 volt battery is actually 13.2 volts. ( 6 x 2.1 volts per cell)

whilst battery is on charge, check that all battery lead connectiions are tight. e.g where they bolt to the engine/body/starter motor.

when charging complete clean both battery terminals and leads, as they will discolour . this in itself can cause starting problems

you don't always have to use distilled water. tap water is fine, as when it gets a charge thru it all the bad stuff goes away anyway. just like boiling water in a jug

hope this has cleared up some stuff for you.

Thankyou!

How does the battery lose water in the first place?
