Wests Tigers veteran Chris Heighington off to Cronulla Sharks in player cleanout

WESTS Tigers are preparing to undergo a player shake-up in the wake of missing the finals, with long-serving lock Chris Heighington poised to shift to Cronulla next season.

In a move guaranteed to create major internal ructions, Heighington - who is still under contract for 2013 - is close to finalising a three-year deal in the Shire to join former Tigers teammates Bryce Gibbs, Andrew Fifita and John Morris as early as November.

Footy Show funnyman Beau Ryan is also being shopped around to rival clubs as the Tigers consider tapping a number of contracted players on the shoulder. Coach Tim Sheens denied any deals had been done, but he admitted "there are some things that are going to happen that might make a few people unhappy".

"There's no doubt that we've got to do something in our recruitment area. We're looking to improve our depth rather than our main roster," Sheens said.

"But we've got to make some changes. I'm not going to say we have to turn everything upside down.

"That doesn't mean everything is wrong. We've got to analyse everything. What was done right, we stick to - what wasn't, we change.

"Every club prior to the team that runs second will do that this year."

Sheens and the Tigers were forced to endure major internal waves midway through last season when the club was looking to offload popular players Heighington, Ryan, Liam Fulton and Gibbs.

Ultimately, Gibbs and prop Andrew Fifita were squeezed out in a move that threatened to derail the club's 2011 title aspirations.

Gibbs had only just signed a three-year extension before he was released, a position Ryan finds himself in after the outside back recently negotiated a new deal with chief executive Stephen Humphreys.

Dual international Lote Tuqiri, currently off-contract, is also expected to struggle to secure a new deal.

The Sunday Telegraph understands Manly prop Brent Kite heads a list of players the Tigers are in negotiations with in a bid to bolster a roster as touted premiership favourites in March.

Braith Anasta, Eddy Pettybourne and Bodene Thompson will all join the club over the off-season to offset the departure of English international Ellis.

The Sunday Telegraph has been told Heighington is fuming at the latest move to squeeze him out.

"Chris has been a great servant to this club but we're not looking past next year at this point," Sheens said.

"I'm not saying we won't re-sign him, but at this point we're not looking to extend that contract.

"Our main priority would be Robbie Farah and possibly big Keith Galloway, who both have one year to go. Liam Fulton is another one."

Sheens wants Royce Simmons to return to the Tigers as an assistant next season but was adamant that it would not cost any of his other support staff at the club - Steve Georgallis, Bryan Hyder, Grant Jones or Warren McDonnell - a job.

People have been callig for a player clean out for years… Now over the past 2 seasons it's happening and people are whinging about it...

wow!
Not sure what to think about that. Would certainly make for a very nervous wait after mad monday.
Obviously the whole moving away from the family thing isn;t seen as an issue.

Hino, if you are offered a spot at Cronulla then take it.
look after and secure your future
don't hang around here waiting for a contract that may not be offered.

Highno if someone is willing to offer you a 3 yr contract in the nrl grab it with both hands because you have been a great servant but I would think out club crazy if we have you a 3 yr deal. Releasing him now make sense and is a great decision by management. Beau on the other hand we should keep

We have one of the best playing rosters in the comp. There's no need to get rid of Hino. The issue lies with coach Sheens and how he INEFFECTIVELY uses Hino - like being continually directed to run at the markers. Any player is going to suffer if all he is asked to do is run at the markers.

Sheens is tearing this club apart!

This is just BS…well before Moltzen resigned.....Ryan agrees to a 3 year deal....then we find out he cant sign due to salary cap issues....afterwards the Tigers resign Tim Moltzen to 2013 and beyond...I thought there were salary cap issues???....The club is spinning us BS and treating players like dirt!

Ive no problems with Heighno & Ryan being punted, my concern is who theyre replaced with

I'm with you not overly concerned have to look after our under 20's . Ryan does try hard and loves the club , but he might be a disturbance for the other guys with joking and stuff.

What a retarded thing to say….you want to sack the bloke because he has a personality?

get rid of rhino, not beau. what kind of message does moving on our best back of the year send to the team?

We didn't appear to have cap issues when we offered L Lewis $400k. What would have happened if he did sign, we'd play with 9 players every week?

Beau was our best back this year, there are plenty of guys in front of him I'd punt first - Moltzen, Ayshford, Reddy, even Utai.

First we get rid of Gibbs, now possibly Ryan. Tip for players who want a contract with the Tigers: don't show any passion for the club or your team mates, and don't you even dare put in good performances on the field, it won't get you anywhere here
