Coach Potter

I was reading an article on ABC Grandstand that rated Potter as second most likely coach to get the chop mid-season, after The Dragons' Steve Price.

The article said that he alienated a 'fair chunk' of the players last season. Can any of you tell me who they are talking about. Benji, presumably, but who else? I agree that he won't make round 12 if we don't win some games. What do you think?

If there was alienation within the player group it would of been there was a new sheriff in town. Discipline and hard work can be strange to some that have not had it for years , the talk of the Coach getting the sack early might be a bit premature considering the make up of the board. I think he will be given the time to build this team as stability is what the club needs at this stage!

Ha ha he sure did alienate the players and it was called the boys club which ran the club with discipline hard training and a set of rules.

Agree with this. The players ran their own race until Potter took over. Judge him at the end of the season.

Benji's mates, such as Moltzen I would say. Also, they would just be reading between the lines with how p#**ed off Farah was when he was benched during the Manly game. Clutching at straws….anything to sell a newspaper.

Discipline and composure is exactly what this club needs. I see Coach Pottor in the molds of Bennett and Bellamy on these fronts.

I would rather we Judge him at the end of Next season.

A few more players we need to see move on along with the further maturing of a very young squad

Arguably our two best players, Farah and Woods, have both signed on long term since Potter has been coach. That tells me they like his style. That's good enough for me.

I posted several times last year that this was the case with Potter stating he wasn't there to be liked by the players and he pretty well achieved that.
Players didn't like his authoritarian way and he put himself offside with a few senior players. Unlike Bennett and Bellamy who both take an interest in players outside of football he chose to distance himself from the players.
But that was last year.

After being spoken to and nearly loosing his job his loosened up this year and players have been quoted as saying so.
His football knowledge is lacking but his surrounded himself with smart assistants who can help him with that. He attended Robbie's birthday dressed as Harry Potter and he does look to taken it down a notch so far.

He had a tough job to do last year and his come through it done the hard work and we look like a better team on paper. I would really like him to do something about Blair.
I have a much better feeling about Potter this year and I am making the bold statement that I can even see him giving someone a hug this year !

Well done Irvine - I never thought I'd see the day where you had anything even half positive to say about Potter. So kudos to you. I have always been a supporter of Potter - as you alluded to Irvine - he was on a hiding to nothing last year, with players he didn't know, some he didn't want, assistant coaches who were hopeless and a divided Boardroom. He's looking a lot more comfortable in his role now, and I think regardless of early season results, will be given the entire season to prove himself. I just can't see this new Board being willing to pay out yet another coach's contract half way through the season. It'd be nuts to do so.

Cant think of to many coaches who have had so many hurdles to jump over in their first year in the job and I think their will be plenty more this year. If he gets through this year he will be on the path to becoming a career coach.

In saying that Iam still hearing hearing that their is a substantial group of players that just cant gell to him. Although I would imagine a positive start to the season will probably quash a lot of that. The old saying winning teams are happy teams!!!!!

Didn't Fulton say in a recent video on the team website that Potter came in pretty hard last year, trying to establish himself (quite rightly) as the boss?

I rarely use blame the coach card cos over the years we have seen clubs just stuff up over the coaching dramas . Parramatta blamed Brian Smith and then they blames about 6 MORE coaches then they still earn the wooden spoon ??

Ive said it before Roosters Trent robinson is as well a rookie coach He is made to look like a genius premiership first year HE MUST BE AMAZING .
so wat has he got that POTTER doesn't have ?
Maybe - Sonny bill , Jennings , wharea hargrave , pearce , Maloney , nuuasala , tuivasa scheck , minnichello ,friend , cordner , keny dowell, tupou . U cant coach if u have a sub standard team Trent robinson has about 8-10 players of rep quality I reckon that helps a bit

I have made my feelings pretty clear on Potter. In summary:

Good bloke although recent comments suggest he has a bigger ego than I had previously thought.
Good at the selection table and okay on recruitment;
Dreadful on tactics;
Worst man manager i have seen in 30 years.

Unless he, with his team, drastically improve on the last two, we will be in for a tough year.

Coaches like Bellamy and Bennett are disciplinarians but one thing you will always notice is that players love to play for them. IMO based on his recent comments Potter has failed to realise this is a team game.

Until Potter can learn the delicate balance that Bellamy, Bennett etc have achieved, he will struggle as an NRL coach.

Considering no one who has commented on here knows the man and how he actually runs the team, or gets on with this or that player, there seems to be a lot of advice on what he should and shouldn't change about himself.
Personally I don't care what he does or who likes him as long as we win enough games to get us well away from the bottom end of the table - and I have a feeling we will.

Heard Robinson interviewed last year after they towelled us up. He basically said what you just have. Oh and he also said Potter can coach

Lets close down the forum then if we arent able to comment.

I base my comments on what I see and hear. Yes, that may not always be reliable but this is a fan forum.

I think you are missing the point. Of course we all will be satisfied if we win. However, I am saying i think we will struggle to win if Potter uses the same approach as last year bearing in mind the cattle is largely the same.

Please!!! Here we go again, r u guys serious??
Potter is a halfwit and can't coach or form a sentence. You guys, really the only chance potters got to stay the coach is through his assistant coaches payten and kidwell!!!
You will never see potter invited onto the footy shows as they all know he is as boring as f**k!! And if they do I can't wait to watch it cause I'm in need of a good laugh!!

He had Sheens squad last year.

Every thing I have heard from Simona, Nofo, Fulton, Woods and Farah(three have resigned with Potter at the helm) has been absolutely positive.

Personally i think Benji carrying on like a pork chop last year gave Potter no chance.

I wish him luck this year.
