Can anyone tell me who makes coaching appointments for the junior reps. For the last three years they picked incompetent coaches and have let their own juniors down badly. And surprise, surprise they have done it again. Have they ever wondered why a lot of good juniors end up playing S G Ball and Harold Mathews with other clubs. The board at Wests Magpies need to have a good look in the mirror and stop blaming the players. This problem is all the boards fault.

Harvey Howard I believe is the main man who makes coaching appointments for the junior reps at Wests.

I know what you are saying with regard to some of the appointments.
This year Wests had the choice between Nal Wijesekera and Cameron Blair for SG Ball. They chose Blair and Wijesekera went to St. George. St. George where minor premiers and Wests finished last.

However, Wests Magpies Harold Matts where one win away from making the Grand Final this year under the coaching of Derek McVey and Craig Macleod.
They did a great job in making the team competitive on a weekly basis.

Are your concerns with Derek and Craig who are now the SG Ball coaches for 2010 or the new Harold Matts coach Scott Hartas ?

my concerns are certainly not with derek or adam booth before him, who by the way was given the flick because he dared to better himself with the tiger cubs instead of going to england last year. What he would have learnt would have been of great benefit to the magpie juniors. no my concerns were with greg mcdonald 3 yrs ago with har. matts. who they then the following year promoted to sg ball and sacked after 3 games giving the job to scott hartas. he got sacked the following year and gave it to cameron blair who had neither the coaching skill or personal skills to do the job and then to my disbelief have installed scott hartas as h. matts coach for next year who simply should not be coaching at this level because he does not possess the skills to do the job. it beggars belief that harvey or whoever came up with this bright decision. all i can say i feel sorry for those boys who will be in the team.

That's very interesting. I wondered what happened to Adam Booth. You obviously know a lot more about the history and the whole set up at Wests than I do.

Scott Hartas I know from the Junior Magpies development squads and i couldn't agree more with you he doesn't have the knowledge, skill or insight for this level.

I think the best way to find out if a person is a good coach or not is to ask the players.

I don't understand Wests…I love the club but they are just so far behind Balmain and the other clubs in just about everything they do from supplying information on their web site to appointing quality coaches.
Maybe all the Wests people are just volunteers and they don't have the resources, I don't know.

I think the Harold Matts and SG Ball coaches get paid don't they ?
Its not just a matter of getting a ticket and having a go....we obviously wouldn't be any better as coaches.
Its shopping around for quality coaches with experience...But if they don't get paid maybe that is the problem.

is that all you can suggest. yes i agree they are all volunteers but i know for certain that better qualified coaches applied for the job, with successful records and still didn't get the job. secondly i dont have the time to coach at that level and not for one moment am i suggesting i would do any better but i know a good coach and a bad one.finally for those saying i should go to meetings or get my coaching certificate, which by the way i have, i suggest instead of criticising me you should be asking questions of the people in charge which i have done.

Yes, thats all I can suggest - suggestion, it was a suggestion, not criticism.

Why should I be asking questions, its your drama - you say you asked questions of those in charge?
Whats the result?

One question for you, do you have a son in these teams?

i've watched a lot of junior rep league over the past few years and it still amazes me that Wests don't dominate more at this level considering the area is a great breeding ground for future NRL players. At times the teams are unstoppable and at other times they are a rabble in both defence and attack in the basics of the game. Derek McVey seems to have the right idea though. I'm not going to criticise the other coaches though as I dont have any insight at the day to day goings of the teams - but agree that questions need to be asked.

Asking the question on here won't get you any answers though. As I doubt any of the Wests directors read this forum.

its hard to get a good junior rep coach as most of the good ones are in the higher grades. About them being volunteers well im not so sure, i know balmain pays a $5000 retainer to head coaches…

I can tell you at Wests at least, all the junior rep coaches are volunteers. Magpies might supply the staff with thier training gear, but thats it. Even at Junior Rep level, alot of the people involved are just doing it for love of the game.

I suggest people actually have a chat to the coaches once in a while, they are normal people, and they work damn hard at what they do.
