Dead wood in the NRL

Saw this article in today's SMH discussing how Brisbane gets all the Friday night matches. No prizes for guessing who is complaining…...Manly & Cronulla.

Classic example of why the NRL can never move forward whilst it has the dead wood of clubs like Cronulla and Manly. Brisbane gets the free-to-air tv coverage and sponsorship because they are a successful club. Who would not want to sponsor them? Who would want to sponsor teams that represent two small suburbs of Sydney?

**Friday on their minds: clubs want fixed schedule**
March 14, 2012

BRISBANE have been given a huge advantage on and off the field, with the club scheduled to play on Friday night for the opening eight weeks of the competition - a run that is likely to continue until State of Origin.

The decision by Channel Nine to choose Brisbane for its Friday night coverage on a weekly basis has heightened calls for fixed season-scheduling to be part of the next broadcast deal, while boosting claims for a second Brisbane team.

Rival officials say a seven-day turnaround makes a massive difference to Brisbane's preparation for matches, while being on Channel Nine every Friday night enables the Broncos to attract greater corporate support - a fact highlighted by Cronulla's lack of a major sponsor.

''It's a massive factor in the Broncos' favour,'' a trainer from a rival club told the Herald. ''Knowing that they play every Friday night allows them to have a regimented preparation … The Broncos would have a recovery session on Saturday morning and their players could then have the rest of the weekend off.''

In contrast, Manly opened their premiership defence by travelling to play the Warriors in a replay of last season's grand final, then backed up five days later against Wests Tigers. The Sea Eagles play on Monday at Cronulla and do not have another Friday night game until round eight - but at least they have some exposure on free-to-air television.

With the Broncos-Titans round-eight clash set to be confirmed for April 27, the Sharks are the only club yet to receive a Friday night match - and they are also the only club without a major sponsor.

''Obviously having free-to-air games makes it much easier when you sit in front of sponsors,'' Cronulla chairman Damian Irvine said. ''We are right at the pointy end of signing a sponsorship deal, and we will do that, but it is no longer a case of sponsors wanting to throw a name on a jersey and being happy to use you as a billboard.

''They want to know exactly what your media monitoring situation is … exactly what your coverage is for free-to-air and pay TV. It is double-pronged because they don't only want to know that in deciding whether they choose you over another club or another sport, they also want to know that as to how much value they actually place on the position once they decide they are going with you - so in that light, free-to-air games are absolute gold.''

Manly boss David Perry said it was no coincidence the Broncos are by far the most profitable club in the NRL, with a turnover of about $30 million per season. ''When you are getting free-to-air TV games scheduled weekly, your TV viewership numbers are significantly higher … so to a potential investor, we are significantly disadvantaged,'' he said.

As a result, both Irvine and Perry believe each club should get a set number of Friday night games as part of the next TV deal.

''Hopefully all clubs can be on a fair playing field going forward because it clearly hasn't been equal historically,'' Perry said.

However, neither Channel Nine sports boss Steve Crawley or NRL football operations director Nathan McGuirk made any apology for the Broncos being consistently chosen for Friday night matches.

''It is one of the aims of Channel Nine that one of the two free-to-air games on Friday night is a game with some Queensland content they can show live into Queensland, and they are choosing the Broncos clearly to maximise ratings,'' McGuirk said. ''Last year the Broncos had 16 Friday night games … it will probably be about the same this year.''

Crawley said Channel Nine would support the admission of a second Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp Stadium.

''They have got the best stadium in the world and if you could have a game coming out of there every week that would be great for rugby league and great for the broadcaster,'' he said. ''Queensland is a big part of our game and they have only got three teams at the moment, so, from a broadcaster's point of view, having an extra team in Queensland would be a wonderful thing.''

Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that your front office is a complete shambles and your board is constantly at each others throats would it either, David?

I'd much rather see more variety in teams Channel 9 choose for Friday night footy. I don't care whether a team is from Sydney or Queensland. I just want to see attractive football.

Teams like the warriors can play some very good attacking football but never seem to get selected. At least our guys are currently in favour and we get plenty of coverage.

Sorry but who wants to watch cronulla on a Friday night? Can't say I'm surprised that the sharkies aren't channel nines first pick.

Raiders are in the same boat as Cronulla. Very little FTA coverage and struggling to find a major sponsor.

Just highlites how unequal and unfair this comp really is.
Some teams playing between 5 days and 10 - others a nice steady rugualr 7
Then you have the opponents…..lucky thos team playing Manly Melb & the Doggies (or whoevers at the top of the ladder and playing well) once only....whos playing them twice?
The difference sometimes between making and missing the 8

The whole Cronulla team.

Have never won a comp since entering in 1967 and still don't look likely.

Is that the same team that should have beaten us in round 1?

The comp is extremely unfair and its ludicrous that Brisbane play nearly the whole season on the same night with free to air coverage.

People are bagging out Cronulla and Canberra but they to me will both make the 8 this year - no thanks to the NRL.

Another thing just occurred to me about Brisbane playing every Friday night. It would almost always mean that the team they are playing against has a short turnaround, having played on either the previous Saturday or Sunday. Yet another advantage to Brisbane…

What's new?
Brisbane has been looked after since they first came into the comp.
There are 3 teams in QLD - fair enough if Ch9 want a QLD team to appear in the first TV game up there.
How does Brisbane score the first eight in a row?
PS. Don't be surprised if they get the 2 games after that as well before they have their bye.

I don't see how it is unfair. Each team enters the NRL knowing full well they are competing against Brisbane, Melbourne, New Zealand etc. Instead of Manly and Cronulla complaining how everything is unfair, why don't they look at their own business model. They made the decision to remain at Brookvale and Toyota Park, yet want to be considered comparable to Brisbane for corporate funding - it is a ridiculous notion.

I agree with Ink that the draw is unfair, but when it comes to off field administration and business management, it is fair game. Sydney teams need to realise they are competing with one city (country) teams and regional teams. Both Balmain and Wests made the tough call in 1999 and Wests Tigers now represent large areas of Sydney - we are an attractive proposition for sponsors.

You can't expect the NRL to make everything even, especially off field administration, as this would stifle innovation. By all means the NRL should attempt to spread the playing talent such that teams with large junior pools don't dominate the competition, but it should be survival of the fittest off the field.

Being on free-to-air every week is a huge advantage. Much higher ratings means sponsors will be willing to pay more to have their logo on your jersey. Do you think Cronulla would be sponsorless if they were on channel 9 for the first 8 rounds?

Every game is broadcasted so isn't the exposure to a TV audience the same?

On the Donkeys being on every Friday Night, I can guarantee you not everyone in Queensland wants to watch the Broncos… Even if they showed Cronulla vs Manly, Qld will still hold the ratings as they just want to watch RL!!!

No the exposure between FTA and subscription TV is not the same, there is a far higher audience for FTA rather than Pay TV, I had to get Pay TV on back in the 90's beacuse it was the only way I could get to see the Tigers play because back in 1998/99 we hardly ever featured and I'm sure there are fans of other clubs out there in the same boat.
If anything it should be the Titans who are up in arms about NOT being one of the QLD clubs chosen on a regular basis for Friday Night games, they are struggling big time in all areas and desperately need the great exposure that FTA TV provides, C9 have to realise that just because the Broncos represent QLD they don't represent all of QLD.

To keep Tv ratings high they need to play the football that the fans want to see . If that is Brisbane ,Tigers , or the Warriors so be it Watto is right Qld fans would watch Cronulla v Manly We want the Sharkies to smash the Seaducks as well
Thats as long as we don't fall asleep

I don't think people realize that the two games on a Friday night must include at least 1 QLD team, which is why the Broncos get so many. Considering how well the Titans and Cowboys have gone in recent times, its not very hard to understand

It is disgraceful that the game and the scheduling of matches is governed by TV. The game is fighting against itself. The NRL want people to buy memberships but part of the process in buying one is what games you can get to see. This makes it hard when CH9 and Fox swap and change the venues and won't tell us more than 4 weeks out what day of the weekend the game is on. It has to be part of the new deal that the full season draw is announced at the start as unless there is a genuine problem with the venue it cannot be changed by anyone other than the clubs.
