First home game thrill for Wests Tigers
By Scott Dougherty
ALTHOUGH the Wests Tigers love affair with Leichhardt Oval is more publicised, the players say they enjoy playing at Campbelltown Stadium just as much.

The Tigers play Penrith Panthers in round two of season 2013 on a Sunday afternoon in Campbelltown, but Leichhardt's four games are scheduled for night time kick-offs.

Centre Blake Ayshford said the players were rapt to find out they play their first home game in Campbelltown.

"It's the same as Leichhardt for us," Ayshford said. "It's our home ground and it's better for us to play at our home ground than the SFS or anywhere else.

"We get the majority of the fans and it's good to get a Sunday afternoon game at home because Sundays are great for families."

Even Leichhardt lover Robbie Farah said he viewed Campbelltown the same as he sees Leichhardt Oval. "They are both our suburban grounds and we generally get bigger crowds there," Farah said.

"Although there's no games at Leichhardt on a Sunday afternoon next year, kicking off our home games with a Sunday in Campbelltown should be good and get a big crowd."

Wests Tigers prop and former St Gregory's College, Campbelltown student Matt Groat was excited about the first match at Campbelltown.

"Campbelltown is my favourite field and it's so close to my old school and I just can't wait," he said.

You would think these kinds of things wouldn't need to be said, but apparently they do. Disappointing

Probably says something about our PR in my opinion. Same with the Benji/Robbie rumours that fester and the crap that went around when Ryan/Heighington/Sheens were leaving. We need to do better than this, because it makes us look amateurish, these articles shouldn't have to be produced, it should be assumed that they love playing at both.

they have to say they like the ground , can you see them saying its a crap hole and we rather play lo or sfs

The _GROUND_ at Campbelltown isn't a crap hole. Wests Leagues and it's facilities for fans and players alike are perfectly fine.

Campbelltown itself per say? Well…... not so sure.... it's pretty ordinary in parts.

and before I get jumped on, I have lived and grown up in the area for all of my 31 years.

They can't win can they.

Ignore campbelltown = get abused
Say anything bad about campbelltown = get abused
Complement campbelltown = still get abused

Completely missed the point you did. Its the comparisons to Leichardt that were unnecessary.

a few of you missed what i was saying , the players could not bag any of the grounds , as for gnr4life its you who keeps coming up with keep divides going , so champion read it again it had no reference to any club , just the fact not 1 of OUR wests tigers players can bag grounds out etc , or they would start making the divide worse

Lol with comments you've made in the past, you are in no position to be pointing the finger at others :crazy

My point is we shouldn't have to hear that the players enjoy Cambo as much as Leichardt. You'd think and hope that it would already be a known fact

glad you said past, look back over my last 2 / 3 months , i keep it to myself , yes you may know of who i supported prior but we can also see who you support , you jumped on me straight up , that how divides and crap start , cultured bogan was also straight in and he is a moderator

Yeah, there is a disingenuous vibe about the comments.

Kind of suggests, let's throw the plebs in the south west a few feel good crumbs and then we can rack off, quick smart back to the civilized climes of our parmesan paradise, Norton Street.

it's just forced … In a cringeworthy way.

However I do concede, winding back the imbalance is a very fragile and tricky balancing act.
Perhaps a few throw away platitudes in mainstream rags about Campbelltown being the 'Practical Home' of the club might begin the process.

Nice to see you still harbour those feelings

You're comment was one that would tug on the emotional strings of a lot of ppl, mine wasn't

Ah but it isn't.

You have been around this debate long enough to know that it isn't a known fact, that some people think every mention of players enjoying leichhardt is a slap in the face to Wests fans etc. etc. You know this is the case so let's not pretend.

Let's also not pretend that this is anything more then PR. It is what we should be doing because people on the ground in the Macarthur want to hear players talking about loving their home grounds. People with no knowledge of the festering mess that some people percieve the merger.

Some kid reads the paper and one of his football heroes is talking about how he loves the home ground in his suburb. Attatchment is fostered.

The looking at everything through tinted glasses is the problem, I suffer from it on occasion as do many others. Lets not let it railroad the intended purpose of this and other articles like this in the future.

Players don't come out off their own bats and offer a like or dislike for Leichhardt, Campbelltown or Yankee Stadium. They are asked, or prompted by journo's ... And what upsets Magpie fans (we are all Wests fans Smeg, remember) is that the Leichhardt bias is spawned from Holt Street, TCN Nine etc etc .... Spewing out this mindless, regurgitated dogma about "spiritual home" nonsense. Hence here we are in 2012 with the club attempting a ham fisted realignment campaign.

It is born from the fact the guys commentating and producing the shows and telecasts of games have known football at leichhardt their entire lives. It has always been whereas, in comparrisson, Campbelltown Sports Stadium is a baby of a stadium and the spiritual home of the Western Suburb Magpies was never there.

Ham fisted realignment campaign? Again you are looking at this through very dubious hindsight.

The Wests Tigers are in a campaign to engage with and court all of it's fan base and that is the way it should be.

Anything else just comes across as "Mum, Billy got a bigger Tonka truck then me" Frame it in whatever way makes you feel more validated but that is the essence of the argument
