Farah V's Ennis 2010

Obviously this year the media will push for Ennis to get the hooking job at this year's State of Origin series so I thought I'd start a thread on why some members of the media are insane to even put Ennis' name in the same sentence as Robbie Farah

With an agency as big as sportsbet are willing to give odds of over $21.00 for Ennis to win this year's Dally M's and Robbie Farah $17.00\. Ennis will be hyped as the best selection for that position. Why???

Perception!
Ennis is a little bit harder in defence but farah outwits most hookers/dummyhalves in the game.
When it comes to origin unfortunatley most NSW selectors will look at the hooking role in a more defensive way.
They generally leave the 1,6 & 7 to attack and dictate.

This is why Qld have belted us year after year, Cameron Smith gives them the best of both worlds. X-Factor for QLD!

We havent had a Smith-like 9 for NSW since Elias.

Well Ennis tries to be buddies with everyone in the media, plus he whinges to them so the media give him their fair share of wraps. Farah tends to mind his own business a bit more and stick to his own game.

Ennis also niggles the opposition more, so he gets more of the spotlight when something flares up.

Mixed with his many missed tackles he comes up with the occasional big hit which makes him look like a good defender because people remember that over his many misses.

Farah plays a more flamboyant game so his game is seen as more risky with a bigger chance of making a mistake.

And because of this flamboyant game, his defence doesnt get enough wraps despite making more tackles then Ennis and missing less tackles.

Farah also played injured in origin last year, if it was Ennis playing injured everyone would be saying how tough he is, because it was Farah no one mentioned his injury, they just mentioned how crap he was (Admittedly he had a shocker in game 2 but he set up one try in game 1 and if Hayne's try wasnt denied it wouldve been 2).

And as tri-tops said, the selectors tend to pick a defensive hooker and thats why we have struggled to score points in Origin. Unlike Queensland, rather then pick the best players available, the selectors/coaching staff seem to want to develop these game plans around certain players, even if they arent the best players for those positions.
Remember in 06, the NSW Selectors/coaching staff had this crazy idea to play Gasnier at 5/8 in a decider!

Farah is about twice the defender that Ennis is and misses far less tackles. Ennis being a good defender is one of the biggest myths in the NRL.

i hate Ennis IMO hes the most overrated player in nrl

I would like him to stay in the blues side though cause i go for Queensland

It's purely a perception that Ennis is a stronger defender. Statistically it would be interesting to compare defensive numbers of the two. Ennis barring a form slump will probably get the gig first up as the incumbent. Though Farah is the Australian rep that Ennis isn't. Speaking without bias, they're both pretty close to each other and week to week opinion will change.

We obviously will all agree that Farah is a better hooker and that the warped media perception carries weight.
If Farah had a spokesperson in the media it may be different.

Regardless, when it comes to origin, Ennis did the simple things right and didn't overplay his hand.
Farah fell into the trap of trying to catch markers offside and get penalties which aren't given in origin games.

Eventually I am sure Farah's class will be recognised long term, but he needs to have a great start to the year to get that jersey.
At the end of the day, while I'd love for him to reach his potential as an origin star, having him play 3 extra games for the tigers is only beneficial to the team.

Ironically, Farah's problem is his brilliance. In a side that trains and plays with him every week this is obviously a benefit. However, in a side chock full of stars and that only has a few training sessions with him, there is no opportunity to gel. Farah is more effective when he can dominate. In the NSW side he is not permitted to dominate because of the other playmakers. Elias suffered from the same problem at times and thats why the Australian selectors preferred Steve Walters - a steady, reliable hooker that would shift the ball to the 6 and 7.

 Farah's problem is he's 2 good….that's a good one but I see what you mean and tend to agree.....shows Bellamy's limitation as an Origin coach or NSW dont have a decent halves paring to do the job....

See you ran the critical eye over Heighno in the Manly game....Under 7's hey....

Well a couple of Robbie's passes, a kick for Tuqiri and a dropped ball at crucial stages wouldn't have been out of place at that level....

hahahaha since when was Ennis a better defender than Farah??? Yeah right!!!

Farah had a shocker in Origin 2 but he shouldn't have been playing because he was injured.

Farah is better in defence and attack, but with silly selectors like Laurie 'Big Nose' Daley you don't know who they will chosen.

Funny as it sounds it is true in my view. Origin prefers players than play within a structure and system. Its the same reason Mundine was never considered suitable for origin, regardless of whether or not he was better than Fittler or Daley.

I criticise Farah when he deserves it. I gave him a few serves at the back end of last year. Regardless, Farah is always trying to do something at least - it wont always work but more often than not it does. Heighno is different. For him to have value he has to play mistake free football. During that period on Monday night he was woeful.

This is the way that I honestly see things…..

At club level, Robbie owns Ennis - he has the superior stats and more importantly those plays are of higher quality. He does this year after year in a side that is arguably worse than those that Ennis has been a part of.

HOWEVER....When it comes to rep footy, Farah looks out of his depth whereas Ennis seems to shine more - SOO 3 last year was a classic example. Ennis is the incumbant and will be hard to replce as the selectors can see that even last weekend Robbie had a far superior game however his past may hold him back.
I am of the opinion that some guys adapt to rep football far easier than others. Case in point the sometimes average club players chosen for Queensland who turn into world beaters. I have a feeling that Ennis is one of those players and Robbie isnt.

I'm not saying that Ennis should get the gig merely that I wouldn't be surprised if he does.

Well he selected Ennis in his fantasy team and not only that, he made him captain.

Shows how much Daley knows, and also how much he rates Ennis.

And you say I have no idea. Ennis got subbed in the 26th minute, after giving away 2 consecutive penalties, and wasn't back on until the 67th minute. He didn't have a hand in anything, he did nothing in defence. All he did was pass the ball and kick a goal from in front.

Farah in both his games topped the tackle count and had 3 assists. The one rep game were Farah actually got to play his natural game (80 minutes, no Kurt Gidley getting in his way at dummy half) was for City last year, and he absolutely dominated. NSW needs to stop picking a utility player and just let Farah play the 80.

Whatever suntan, stats dont tell the whole story….

Anyway back on topic, Robbie was the better player of the two in round 1

In round 2, Ennis was suspended so Robbie has to get the vote again.....however imo if Ennis played this weekend he probably would have got the vote as Farah was just terrible.
