Five things we learnt from last night's game
June 14, 2012

1\. Robbie Farah must love tackling.
NRL Stats had him passing the 50 mark with still almost a quarter of the game to go and at the end they credited him with an unofficial total of 64 - twice as much as the second man in the tackle count for the Blues, skipper Paul Gallen. Farah is making a huge success of his second chance at an Origin career. Made a big impact in attack in game one and last night he defended like a man possessed.

2\. Todd Carney is looking much more like an Origin player now.
We were pretty sure Carney was one of those before he played for NSW in Origin I, only for him to succumb to nerves and have a poor game. But he gradually warmed to the task last night and it was his break that led to the try by Brett Stewart early in the second half that put the Blues in front for good. It was a big improvement on game one, with the potential for further improvement in game three.

3\. Corey Parker has a big hole in his left leg.
The wound looked the size of a small harmonica when the TV cameras focused on it after the Queensland forward was injured in the opening minute of the second half. Parker's shin must have been accidentally ripped open by a stud and he was forced from the field for good.

4\. Akuila Uate should not have a mortgage on a NSW spot.
Queensland's left-side attack did a job on Uate in game one and last night the winger did a job on himself when he failed to make an attempt to catch a bomb in the last minute of the first half. Uate and fullback Brett Stewart were in the vicinity when the ball came down, but it was Uate's to catch. The Maroons picked up the scraps to score a try.

5\. Queensland don't own the last 10 minutes of Origin games after all.
Well, not last night, anyway. Trailing by only four points, the Maroons threw everything they could at NSW during those desperate final stages, but they couldn't get the try they needed. It was a resolute defensive effort by the Blues, who came again to almost score another try before standing firm in the face of one final fling from the Maroons.

Greg Prichard

Ricky Stuart could learn a lot from the Qld press conference after the game. Rather than sulk and make excuses, Smith and Meninga were affable and upbeat and gave credit to NSW.

Even in victory, Stuart came across as a dopey gibberer.

Please Humpty, NEVER let him near our Club!?

5 Half the Qld backline was on one leg

With a fully fit backline the result may have been very different

6\. Queenslanders do make excuses !

yeah cmon happy i thought u were better than that. i thought queenslanders were supposed to be "humble" in victory and defeat

IMO NSW can't play any better and QLD have a lot of room for improvement. If it wasn't for some crucial mistakes from Myles and that neanderthal Taylor when QLD were on a roll in the last 10 mins, i don't know how the Blues could have survived. Speaking of the neanderthal, if there was ever anyone to ever fall out of bed and knock themselves out, it would be someone like Dave Taylor

I guess the one area that NSW can improve is in their teamwork. Having a stable line-up should help them a lot in attack. There wasn't much to see in last night's game…

All I'm saying is the journo is comparing a fully fit and functioning Qld to last nights team

All of you must admit If Slater and Tate are 100% and Thurston is playing at his best of course we would of created a try as usual in the last 10 to tear your hearts out again and hand it on a platter to NSW

Now all you have to do is come to the Cauldron and win their against 53500 Qlders wanting blood and to send big Petero out a winner

Good Luck with that

Lockyer got them 6 series wins in a row as captain. Lose the next game and Cameron Smith is the captain that failed to keep it going. I'm right behind you Queensland.

Cam Smith captained the team in 2008 when Lockyer missed the entire series.

Uate played his worst Origin game ever, Jennings barely got involved, Hayne was nullified for a large period, our halves still have miles of improvement, our long kicking still hit Slater on the full despite him being on 1 leg, our forwards played well despite barely making any metres at all, Gallen was carrying injury, we carried 2 Dragons passengers on the bench AGAIN etc.

We have loads of room to improve IMO.

I was thinking that at first, GNR then I thought NO, NSW can definitely improve! This combo have only played 2 games together, they will be better again after last night. Of course QLD will improve, but I wouldn't write us off just yet. This NSW team seems to be a team that will go the extra mile for each other out there, and players with that type of mentality can produce anything - remember Vautin's QLD team?

On Taylor, what a laugh - the replay of the big lug coming through trying to pick the ball up over the try line instead of just falling on it had me in stitches! I guess the fall out of bed must've had more effect than we all thought.

Bit like the next SOO scoreline Ink Sad very sad

NSW win a game of football and their fans are excited. QLD fans are preparing to be presented with the shield so they can do a lap of honor. You'd think they'd leave that to C Smith.

Great enthusiasm by NSW and this was the real difference… Over the past 2 years, everytime NSW would try and run Qld off thier feet, DL would slow the game down and decide when to speed it up. I think from memory, Qld only kicked to touch twice in the whole game on Wednesday! As a result, NSW have alot of momentum going into Game 3 and Qld need to make some minor adjustments. It depends how you look at the current scorecard. NSW have now won 2 from the last 4 games or they have won 2 from the last 8 games. I think the first scorecard is the real indicator and NSW have plenty to play for in Game 3.

Queensland have not hit there straps in this series. The Thurston/Cronk halves combination has not yet clicked, but with a few more games, this will look after itself. Hagan needs to get them to settle and purely play left & right until they have a better understanding. The other area which needs to be addressed, as mentioned above, is who is responsible to speeding up and slowing down the play. This will never be Thurstons go, so this needs to fall into the hands of Cronk and he needs to tone down his energy and execute better control.

Queensland have had a luxury over the past few years of not needing to panic and make decisions on the run. With 20 minutes to go on Wednesday, Mal shouldve made the decision to switch Slater to Tate's Wing and shift Greg Inglis to Fullback and give him a 'roving' commission. GI was double teamed all night and it was obvious Morris wasnt gona let go (Great Effort by Morris). Qld shouldve made the switch to give him greater space but sat waiting...

Game 3 is gona be a cracker... With my Qld goggles on, I still cant see NSW beating Qld and I'm certain NSW wont get the 'good' calls like they did last night at Lang Park. As Gould would say - "Strap Yourself In for Game 3..."
