FOLKES READY TO EARN HIS STRIPES
Tuesday, 10 November 2009
It was a case of a new set of colours and a fresh beginning for Steve Folkes at Concord on Monday, November 9.

The former premiership winning player and coach took the Wests Tigers through their first training session in his role as the club’s new High Performance Manager.

First Training session of 2010......Woo Hoo

He sounded determined to get these guys fit and also help Sheens out with some coaching assistance. Interesting they were getting Folkes to do alot of the training session over Gentle … I guess it is only beginning of the pre season and fitness is all you think about, but still, positive signs.

Will be good to have some fresh input in there too. Things were getting a bit stale after years of the Noyce-Sheens era. Humphreys has brought some new ideas in and pleased many fans by focussing on LO & CS, let's hope Folkes can inject some strength and grit into these guys.

Liam said today that Gentle has been the main man running things

The players may well be dreading an off-season under Folkes but as a Tigers fan it's good to see someone with Folkes experience join the Tigers ranks and I reckon it's only going to be a good thing for the Tigers when they turn out next season.

In 2006 when the Bulldogs squad did their mini marathon, Folkes joined them. He finished 1st.

That's insane.

Will he be an on-field trainer … ie running the drinks out and standing behind the play during the game?

I remember reading about that BB, there's no doubting Folkes own personal fitness and I'm sure he'll have the Tigers fitter than ever come round 1.

Good, good, good!He is up there with our best ever signings.

I'm relishing the thought of a fitter forward pack and some gritty defense. I can only see his appointment as a huge positive for the team. I'd like to think he is in the clubs sights as a head coach at some stage. I'd much prefer a coach of his calibre to have a couple of seasons with the guys before taking the head coaching job, then getting someone in with no history in the club or with the players. I'd like to see him climb the ladder into Royce's then Tims job down the track. But happy for him to plpay his curent role this season and see what impact he has on the players. I just hope there is no tnesion between him and Sheens if he tries to make suggestions here and there.

Hopefully this means that Royce's only job is to look like a gumby in a bucket hat and tell anecdotes from "back in my day" maybe occasionally setting up some witches hats

I think you will find that folkes will take over from sheens when he decides it is time. my guess would be 2012 giving tim 2 more years at the helm.

That would be fine by me,assuming Sheens performs next year.
I met Folkes at eastern creek a few years back,I had my bike down for a track day,I saw this bloke who looked alot like Folkes with his bike.
So I went and had a chat with him,it was indeed Folkes and he is bike nut.
He is a real nice bloke,I told him I was a WestsTiger supporter, but my dad is a passionate Bulldog man,he answered all my questions on the dogs and Tigers, plus he loves motorbikes.
He is as fit as most NRL players of today,he will only improve this club,SBW,Mason and Matuia made him look bad at the dogs, but look where they ended up,he is a winner and he might just instil that in our squad.

its good to have him there at the club.
his experience, let alone his fitness regime will do wonders for the players.

Tough as nails hard-man who would never ask any of our players to do any exercise that he could not do himself. We are very fortunate to have a man like Folksie involved with our team. Any paper tigers will soon be exposed. I now believe that we have the two genuine hard-man props that we have sadly been lacking these last few years. It takes two to tango and I can't wait for the first dance. A wise man once told me, (quote) "You are either tough or you are not tough". Never a truer word was said.

I'm with you Geo,Folkes worth every cent.He was a tough forward in his playing days and hopefully some of this will rub off onto WT pack in 2010.What will Royce Simmons role be,still assistant Coach??.

The whips are out and the flogging has commenced. Reports from players has them all in unbelievable pain, unable to walk after training and going to bed early. Some are even struggling to bend over and tie their own shoelaces. Some of these kids will wish they joined the army instead..
