The Lord Mayor of Melbourne has launched an unprecedented attack on Sydney's monopoly hold over the NRL grand final, branding ANZ stadium a “rundown” venue in a “godforsaken” part of the city.
>
Robert Doyle, former Victorian Liberal leader, told 2UE's Steve Price the grand final should be held at the MCG because Homebush was "a little on the small side".
>
“They're going to get 60,000 people in some rundown stadium in some godforsaken suburb, where you have to take a car trip for a half an hour before you can get a decent meal,” Cr Doyle said.
>
“Whereas if you put it at the MCG this Saturday night, you could get 100,000 people…”
>
His comments come on the back of Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls's criticism earlier in the week.
>
“The (Melbourne) Storm's record of four consecutive grand finals really makes you wonder whether or not the rugby league grand final ought be played here in Melbourne,” Mr Hulls said.
>
Their appeals echo those of countless Queensland politicians and fans who clamour each season for the NRL to break with precedent and allow Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium to host a grand final.
>
ANZ Stadium seats 83,500 for a rugby league game.
>
Price was outraged on radio today, pointing out Homebush was the geographical centre of Sydney and asking Cr Doyle if he'd been there during the Olympics.
>
“That was 10 years ago mate,” Cr Doyle responded.
>
“You can get 10,000 cars in there, you're going to have to either drive there or travel by train.
>
“Do the Sydney people really have loyalty and affection for the stadium?”
>
He further endeared himself to Sydney listeners by asking Price: “Would you live next to that stadium?”
>
“Thousands of people do, there's nothing wrong with it,” Price replied.
>
Cr Doyle said Melbourne would host a string of major international sporting events this year, starting with the Australian Masters golf tournament.
>
“We're about to have a little thing called the Spring Racing Carnival, after that we'll have the Australian Open, after that we'll have the Grand Prix,” he said.
>
Their exchange descended into farce when Price asked Cr Doyle when Melbourne last hosted the Olympic Games.
>
“1956 and since then you've had a flea bag of an event called the Commonwealth Games and that's it,” Price said in answer to his own question.

I love how he says they would get 100,000 there. How many people were at their semifinals? 21,000 and 27,000 at a ground with a capacity of 53,000\. Funny stuff...

the storm are being wasted in melbourne, they dont respect how dominant and how great a team they have down there, you put that team in central qld or north sydney/central coast it would be sold out every week with 20,000+ crowds

They're going to get 60,000 people to the Grand Final!? They had 75,000 there for a PRELIMINARY last week hahaha. What a twat. Ok, it was between two historic rivals, not georgraphically far away from each other either, but when the Storm had a Grand Final rematch in the first week of the finals and they get a crowd of 21,000 people there … come on!

Plus, the game is already sold out you nong. There's your 83,500 crowd.

And this guy's running Melbourne. No wonder Sydney > Melbourne

It's just a publicity piece. They do them all the time…

It's also funny that the journo says it is "unprecedented" but also says "Their appeals echo those of countless Queensland politicians…". Which one is it??

Yes, we know it's all been done before...

Same when Kennett used to say Victoria should be in SOO. He wasn't being serious. There are no shortage of journos ready to swallow it whole though.

Yeah he has his facts very wrong but I don't think it would be a bad thing down the track if a Grand Final was held in Melbourne or Brisbane. Brisbanes bid would have to be higher though because the the capacity at Suncorp isn't as large and therefore the NRL wouldn't make as much money.

Maybe in 20 years if enough people play Rugby League in Melbourne.

I dont think you can call homebush god forsaken its actually a very nice suburb. Mcg would be a crap rugby league stadium and nobody even cares about melbourne.

Its a bit stupid when he goes on to mentipn the spring racing carnival grand prix and the open. Just because they have those it doesnt mean they should hold the nrl grand final.

Lol ANZ a rundown stadium? Its 10 years old. How old is the MCG? 130??

 I think they have made a few improvements in those 130 years….....

The Grand Final will never leave NSW......

in all honesty, i think aslong as 1 Sydney team is in the GF, it will always be held in sydney…

IF 2 out of state teams play, eg broncos vs storm, the highest ranked team of the 2 should host the grand final..

never in my life would i pay to see 2 out of state teams....

 I love the vic bashing of nsw…Once they start packing out Melbournes club games then they can get in line behind Brisbane for a GF.
