according to the telegraph and a report from Dan Ginnane on MMM St george are "hastily" rushing together a press confrence for today where it is expected the retirement of gasnier will be announced..

And to think, when this first surfaced as a rumour, a lot on here thought it had to be a Tiger. Good luck to Gaz, like him as a player, except against us.

Hey Gaz?

Remember all those tries you scored against the Tigers?

Well guess what? You now only have one more chance to rack up a double..

Oh, and by the way, no more "Fire-Ups" with your teammates either…

Gasnier calls time on NRL career

St George Illawarra centre Mark Gasnier admitted he'd made up his mind to retire at the start of the year, saying he didn't have the drive to play rugby league in 2012.

Gasnier, who will turn 30 next week, announced his decision to hang up his boots at Kogarah Oval on Thursday.

He had three years remaining on his contract with the reigning NRL premiers - but no regrets.

"I'm happy and content with the decision and I can't thank the club enough," Gasnier said.

"I decided earlier on in the year, it was just finding the right time to announce it, that is always difficult but it is post-Origin and pre-finals so it's a good time.

"It was something I'd considered for a long time, it suits everyone involved with the decision, I can move on with the next stage of my life and the club can move on."

Gasnier played 15 Tests for Australia between 2001 and 2008 as well as 12 Origins for the Blues, including the most recent series, but revealed he'd not told NSW coach Ricky Stuart of his decision ahead of last week's clash with Queensland.

He also said injuries were not a factor, but admitted he would not have had the hunger to play on in 2012.

"The main thing is I hope we (the Dragons) do well this year, it's been a good year for me, I've enjoyed it but I don't think I would have been as committed next year," he said.

Gasnier said helping the Dragons to their first grand final victory as a joint venture last year, having returned mid-season from a two-year stint in French rugby with Stade Francais, helped make his mind up.

"It did put a few flames out, it was one of the main things I came home to achieve and I got to achieve that, but it's hard to reflect on my career just yet, time does funny things … I will probably look back around Christmas time and then the memories will hit me," he said.

Gasnier is the nephew of Reg Gasnier, and while never quite reaching the heights of the rugby league Immortal, has had an outstanding career in his own right.

A line-breaking centre who has also played on the wing and briefly at five-eighth, Gasnier was generally regarded as the best player in his position in the mid part of last decade.

He was named Dally M centre of the year in 2005 and 2006.

In rugby league he was a one-club man, debuting for the Dragons in 2000 and playing 141 games through till 2008 before he jumped ship to play rugby in France.

While not being the dominant player he was in his mid 20s, Gasnier still did enough to warrant Origin selection this year.

Thank god. Couldn't stand him in any capacity. Good riddance to an overrated player who lived off his family name.

gaz seems like a lost soul at the moment. the impending retirement could explain his below average performance in origin this yr. i bet ya he'll be back

I am surprised that he is retiring. Do you think he will go back to rugby union? I guess this means we will probably see Lawrence and Jennings in the centres for NSW next year.

He got a triple against us one game didnt he? I think it was Elford who was marking him (or trying to) that day at Kogarah.

Saints fans are filthy on him. They let players go to sign him for 4 years and he retires after 2 hahaha, classic. They were looking at getting Josh Morris back but didnt because of Gaz. He'll get boooed at his next game by his own supporters…...almost worth going

Thank God at least he won't be scoring multiple tries against us any more . Hope the Saints fans are still crying when they play us . :bawling

I did a dig up - Actually mate he got one triple against us back in 2002

then a **4-bagger against Elford:**

then ANOTHER triple in a LOSING effort!

then **ANOTHER** triple:

yeah i was there at the game when he got 4 tries against us :brick:

Gasnier really lifted against us. Back around 2004-2006 he was the best centre in the game, before a long term injury really set him back before he took off to go to France. Le Gaz was never the same player after returning. Anyone find it a little sus that they pay him peanuts for 2 years with a heavily backloaded contract, so the 2 years he is supposed to earn the big bucks he isn't actually playing.

The newest way to cheat the salary cap is to pay a player for a year before or after they have a stint at the club . IE Todd Carney was on the books a year early . And I'm sure other clubs are now onto it .

Also I would be prepared to bet big dollars that Gaz will play again . Early in his career I recall him having some issues and stepping away from playing for a period of time , I think this is a recurrence of that attitude .
