Sacked Titans coach snubs big-money Super League move to join rival NRL club

By Simon Brunsdon

UPDATE: The Roosters have beaten a number of rival clubs to the signature of sought-after coach Justin Holbrook.

On Friday morning Nine's Danny Weidler reported Holbrook had decided to join the Chooks as an assistant coach, snubbing approaches from the Bulldogs, Knights, and Super League club Warrington, with the Roosters confirming the news in a statement on Friday afternoon.
Warrington was desperate to bring Holbrook back to England, where he had success coaching St Helens before landing the gig at Gold Coast in the NRL.

Kangaroos captain James Tedesco has been closely following Ryan Papenhuyzen's long recovery and revealed how he had reached out to the Storm fullback after suffering a similar injury.

Tedesco, the Australian, NSW and Sydney Roosters skipper, suffered a similar injury against the Raiders in 2014 when the then Wests Tigers fullback clashed knees with Canberra captain Terry Campese in the opening tackle.

Harley parked: Eels running out of time and options after failed bid for Raiders flyer

Parramatta have all but given up on signing a winger before Monday’s transfer deadline after a late bid for Canberra’s Harley Smith-Shields failed.

The Eels could move Bailey Simonsson to the wing or give Arthur Miller-Stephen his NRL debut with Isaac Lumelume, who was named to start against St George Illawarra on Sunday, very unlikely to play.

The western Sydney club has had a bad run with wingers. Maika Sivo (suspension), Lumelume, Haze Dunster and Zac Cini (injuries), and Waqa Blake (form) have all missed portions of the season.

Harley-Shields was seen as a stop-gap solution for the final four rounds of the year for the Eels, and was expected to start against the Dragons. Fox Sports reported Smith-Shields had even packed his car and was ready to drive to Sydney on Monday, only for the Eels to change their minds.

The Raiders confirmed they were prepared to allow Smith-Shields to leave, but only if the Eels gave them permission to negotiate with Ethan Sanders. Sanders, a standout playmaker for NSW’s under-19s State of Origin team, is tipped to join the Raiders for the 2025 season.

Season likely over for Moses

The Eels have confirmed Mitchell Moses suffered a suspected fractured eye socket with scans to possibly rule him out for up to six weeks and the season.

Moses sustained the injury inside the opening five minutes of the match but played the remainder of the first half with coach Brad Arthur praising his playmaker for playing on as long as he did.

And to think, after all this time, the only thing Jackson Hastings needed was a bit of love. And the right environment.

According to those up Newcastle way, there is no great secret to getting the best out of the much-maligned and much-misunderstood Hastings.

“Jackson has found a playing group and community that brings the best out of him,” Knights coach Adam O’Brien says. “They believe in him and, in return, he’s enabled everyone else to be best they can be.

“We needed that, and he’s delivered.”
