Generation Y

It is interesting to see the difference in generation Y and X based on the goings on in the footy world over the past few years. I am a generation X which based its decisions on loyalty over everything else. This was largely based on values passed down by the former generation that were loyal beyond anything.

For example if a Foran was generation X he would of been a one club player no matter what the perceived failings of the club or coach, he maybe would of stuck on to try and change things. and then he would think I may as well stay.

In any generation you have personality types (Cherry Evans) that follow the money or who change for the promise of something better (Sonny Bill, ).

But the high achievers of Generation Y want to LEARN and IMPROVE themselves. Look at Hayne. There is no way he would of followed his dreams 10yrs ago….he just would not of risked it.

I think this is explains what happened in our club last year. Despite what we all thought at the time we are lucky our club did not implode like Manly has. Maybe I am wrong.

The key learning is that we you need to keep challenging this generation.

Im not sure what age group is which….but money has attracted players from all gens over the years...maybe more so than now because theres more on offer

I find QLDers are easily swayed...DCE has no integrity, he has no personality...Foran, despite being a Kiwi...is basically a Manly Jnr

The salary cap was designed so the talent would be spread around the clubs and it has done that.

Gen X doesn't have a mortgage on loyalty.

its probably more because mal meninga was the first player to break the 100k mark in around 1986.

now DCE and Foran command over a million dollars each. that means that a club can easily offer the eqivalent of meninga's entire salary as a little bonus to come to their club.

fair enough to players to look after their future. the avg career is 50 games with little post footy opportunities. it can all be taken away in an instant with little fallback. they should, and are, taking care of themselves and family first.

I agree with Qlders who end up in NSW based team at an early age Ink

But then again a lot are trying to get back to Qld

But the one's who start at a Qld club many seem to stay

I try to avoid them

Had this conversation with my partner the other day….
I'm 25, she is 22.

It's a business and they only have a short amount of time to capitalize on their abilities.
Gotta look out for #1
If company X is willing to pay you more than company Y, what's stopping you...
Just like in the work force.
Nothing personal, nothing to do with loyalty....executive decision.
$$$$ talks.

I doubt DCE's decision was purely based on money. From all reports, the management stuffed around from him and then at the end he just decided you know what, I'm stupid to not take that money.

Same happened to teddy last year. You can't classify all Gen Y as money hungry. How many one club players are there really?

its the government that pushed us to work like this - so sad

The government can't be blamed for everything. My reading of many Gen Y is that many are a lot less mature than Gen X were at the same age.
