South Sydney Rabbitohs five-eighth John Sutton was assaulted during a night out in Sydney's eastern suburbs, it has been reported.

The 27-year-old NRL player was in Bondi when he was caught up in a fight at about 11.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Police said an argument began between two groups of men in Curlewis Street, with four men trading punches.

The two groups had been escorted out of the White Revolver nightclub before the violence flared, the ABC reported.

Sutton was present at the scene and was assaulted, the ABC said.

A spokesman for Souths declined to comment to AAP and calls to Sutton's mobile phone went unanswered.

Two metal bollards were thrown at a nearby hotel during the fight and the venue's manager was also threatened and attacked.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The Terrorgraph reports it differently - first report may have been off the mark

HIGH-profile footballer John Sutton will give a statement to police after witnessing a brawl outside an exclusive Bondi Beach nightclub.

The South Sydney five-eighth was partying at White Revolver, a secretive party venue favoured by Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim, when trouble broke out on Saturday about 11.30pm.

But police said Sutton, a member of the notorious Bra Boys surf gang who credits the brotherhood with helping him chart a path to professional football, was only a witness to the brawl.

It's understood the 27-year-old was among two groups of men who got into an argument on Curlewis St after leaving the A-list club.

The argument became a brawl with four men punching each other and other men attempting to separate them, police said. During the fracas, two metal bollards were picked up and thrown at the front of the club.

Sutton did not throw a punch and did not try to separate the fighters. Police corrected earlier reports that Sutton was assaulted, saying he was only a witness.

The brawlers walked away and were followed by the nightclub manager and his friend. Police said the pair were threatened and the manager's friend assaulted.

Sutton will be among several people to give a witness statement to police.

Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said the club had been informed of the incident.

"Our understanding is he's a witness, not a participant, and we're comfortable with his position," he said. "My understanding is he wasn't attacked, he never threw a punch or was involved in a fight.

"He actually went back into the club for another half an hour before he went home with his wife."

Last year, Sutton was blasted as being "arrogant" and "just plain rude" by a magistrate after he hung up on a police officer investigating a car accident.

He pleaded guilty to failing to give way at a traffic light and not providing particulars to police after a minor accident in Maroubra in May 2010.

Sutton handed his details to the driver - whose car received damage to one door and a tyre - but when the man was later found to have suffered whiplash, police began investigating the crash.

Doesn't bother or interest me. i ad plenty of these in my time.

These guys are clearly targets but you cant ask them to stay home all the time.

Im happy to move on..

lol… I was just think last week "who will be the face of the game" this year and wondering what scandal will happen.

DCE seems like a wholesome, likeable guy - he would be my choice

DCE is too young, put an guy who has been around for a while and has proven himself to be a mature head off the field. Billy would be my choice.
