How can't we afford decent players?

Just this year we have lost

Blair - 600k
Thomson - 200k
Anasta - 350k
Fulton - 300k
Gavet - 100k
BMM - 150K
Paterson - 200k
Austin - 80k

Thats almost 2mil from our cap, numbers are obviously made up. Say 1 mil went towards retaining Teddy, Siro and Woods who is a Marquee where has all the rest of the money gone? I am sure the NRL cover the 6mil in the cap so we obviously can afford to pay these players.

Because the cap isn't a simply "in vs out", for any team in the comp.

You are right that a large number of players left and we should have freed up cap space, but that cap space may have been reallocated to heavily backended contracts of the players we already have. For me its the only logical conclusion to arrive at, possibly with a directive given by the NRL to do so as a condition of the recent loan.

Cause it December and ALL the decent players are already under contract with other Clubs…

There is a Plan in place....have faith...

The fact the NRL grant covers the cap is neither here nor there. If the club has a shortfall in another area they would have to redirect those funds, so the grant doesn't always go only to player wages.

. Anasta was on about 200k.

…because our club has been run extremely poorly, they are now trying to fix things and they only way for that to happen is to actually start paying outstanding monies owed.

That's the way I see it to. Or should I say I hope that is the reason. Also the likes of Paterson and Anasta were off contract so were never factored into our 2015 cap, so their 2014 contract value has no relevance to 2015 and beyond.

I also would imagine Brooks,Moses and Tedesco chew up a fair chunk of cap space

Yes 'unproven' players being paid a fortune of the likes of Thurston, Cronk and Inglis only highlights just how inept our recent club management has been.

What a very stupid short sighted decision from previous administrations. Now the club and fans have to prepare for the unpalatable consequences.

You have to pay at least market price and plenty of other clubs would have jumped at our trio at the same price or even more. This is one call the club got right

Now that we are in bed with the NRL in terms of financial support, the oversight is probably tight and the club is doing what it can with someone peering over its shoulder.

Yeah I understand that, Supercoach, but I think they went overboard. There is no guarantee that these players will end up being worth what the club is paying them now and meanwhile we're completely strapped for cash and can't afford to buy anyone worthwhile to compliment them. I think Moses and Brooks will struggle behind our current forward pack. Big money spent on Galloway, Lawrence and Blair and now these guys - the club has learned nothing.

Recently we signed quite a few '**decent**' players: Taupau, Lodge, J Grant, Austin at a bargain price

Unfortunately we cannot say the same for Anasta, Peterson, Halatau (more expensive, but far from 'decent players').
Except for the last season, the same applies to Blair :frowning:

This has come up a few times recently.

Does everybody remember that we asked for an NRL bail-out?
That the agreed terms of said bailout was that we would repay the loan out of our club grant every year?

The 2014 NRL Grant is $7.75M, the salary cap $6.1M. That leaves a $1.65M gap, which no doubt would have been eaten up by our recently acquired and quite extensive coaching and sports and conditioning departments.

Doing the maths, where do you all think we have pinched the pennies to make our repayments from… not rocket science.

I'm sh!t at maths so my reckoning .. It'll take just over 4 1/2 years to pay off the loan .
Geez were a rabble !

Tedesco isn't on that much in 2015
