I heard from a Tigers player at the start of the year that they have plenty of money in the bank for players especially with Ellis leaving and the concessions the club would receive with players like Farah/Fulton who have played their whole careers here. I also believe we were paying a percentage still for Gibbs because his contract was backloaded. They hadn't purchased anyone because Potter wanted to play incumbents to begin with and build his own team around the ones who stood out and sign players accordingly.
I would expect players like Lote, Utai would certainly be released at the end of the year. And spend some of that cash on resigning Koro with a better deal. Nofo was already resigned last year.
The issue with the Tigers is lack of props (or healthy ones at that) and size in the back row.
I would expect Siro to start making that transition this year or next and possibly see a big back rower purchased for next season. Possibly Frank Pritchard or Eastwood if rumours prove to be true.
It seems Potter saw our lack of props straight away, then signed Gavet. However, injury has hit hard and he has publicly stated we need some more back ups. Time will tell.
Kennedy would be a great pickup if the price was right, as would Kasiano if those rumours are true. A toiler like Clinton would be a stop gap measure for this season, but could also be a good cheap buy like Bell.

heard from a sowfs insider today that the wabbits are clearing out asotasi, crocker and matt king to get folau for next season.

IMO A lot of what happens this year with new player/upgrade existing player contracts will depend on what performance measurements the Board has placed on Potter for 2013/14\. Did they agree that this period would be 1\. a rebuilding phase or 2\. demand a premiership. Either way there must have been some sort of measures of performance that were agreed with some 'what if' clauses included such as what if half the total squad is injured for the majority of the season ..what if B or R are injured and miss the majority of the season. I say 'what if' as it would not be reasonable to expect a premiership if 50% was injured or our marquee players were missing for whatever reason the majority of the season.
IMO the cost of Sheens , whilst the miss management of this really pisses me off, does not effect our ability to buy players as his payments are not included in the salary cap and the only effect it can really have is on cash-flow short term. The back load payments for Gibbs and potentially Fifita should be finished this year so we should have our full cap or the majority thereof available in 2014.
The decision on who we buy for 2014 and, more importantly, which NYC/State Cup players we lockin and upgrade I think will depend on whether or not the Board has 'faith' in what Potter can deliver for the next 3-5 years. If it were me the first person I would either upgrade or move on would be the coach and by mid season the Board or should have a reasonable indication if he wasn't going to meet the criteria set .
The question I ask of Forum members is do you think the Board asked for rebuilding or a premiership and if rebuilding what performance indicators would you be happy to accept as a pass mark?

Rebuilding. For a pass mark I would expect;
(i) that the First Grade teams plays with good teamwork and confidence.
(ii) the management begins looking (before shut the gate time) for competent reinforcements for 2014.
At this stage of the season it is a Fail Mark as each of the above indicators look to be a long way from being reached.

We dont need to rebuild; we have the crop to make the 8 this year. whether we do is another question as that involves staying injury free and playing with heart and desire.

Nothing much can be done about injuries..just look at what has happened so far this year..heart & desire are subjective measures and not easily quantifiable ..each person can have a different feeling..every forum shows this. IMO there must be hard numbers and probably the best numbers are the defence stats , given we are classified as being the most deficient in this area

well yeah obviously, but thats just what I want out of the team this season and it would be great instead of some stupid 'rebuilding' year which our club doesnt need as we have plenty of quality players in koro, farah, benji, galloway and woodsy as well as a BUNDLE of up and comers.
As long as the team is making steady progress towards the structure Potter wants implemented then I'll be happy. I don't 'expect' anything special this year in terms of results - certainly not a top 8 position. (However, I'll be delighted should that occur).
For a first year coach, there is much more than just on-field results that goes towards impressing a Board and a CEO. By the sounds of it, Potter is ticking the boxes as far as the CEO is concerned. This is definitely a rebuilding phase for the Tigers. Not just in personnel, but more importantly, in playing style.

Rebuilding and blooding youngsters year. Still should go close to a top 8 spot.
