Can anyone name a rookie halfback that has dominated in his 1st year of football and flourished from thereon?

Johns, Thurston, Prince, Langer were all young and inexperienced but developed into some of the best halfbacks the game has seen.

Its the hardest job in the team and this young bloke has something that is very rare, Time.

Remember, this is a young kid playing with men and he is learning his trade.

Playing with others last year in his age group, he was the No.1 player.

Its just a matter of time and luck with injuries.

Sheens is one of if not the best at spotting talent and developing it.

The first time we saw Robert Lui play, he was a little rusty. This year, he's come back and is killing it! And yet, some of you blokes still don't think he should be in the side! He has a great amount of potential, and is our future half for years to come.

Totally agree Lui is our best halfback and gives far more options than anyone else

Moltzen is also very young so this arguement doesn't really prove anything. To me, moltzen is faster, more elusive, has a better footy brain and is a far better organiser. Benji also plays a lot better when moltz is at half as they can read each others plays better. My favourite play that I have seen in recent years is the 'out ball-in ball' where farah passes out wide to benji to passes it back inside to moltz who's running onto the ball, worked a lot of the time

My only problem with Lui is his injuries…

So did Benji for a while, We should stick solid - Lui is only 20

Moltz to bulk up for #1 or #3

This is a Melbourne play that has worked for us in the past also. Unfortunately, the player running onto the ball is supposed to be the Fullback?!

I must say, I would still like to see Timmy Moltzen wearing the 7 jersey, personally I think they should experiment with the halves combination, where you have Moltzen at 6 and Lui at 7\. But it doesn't matter how many times Marshall stuffs up, he'll still get picked.

i don't know if it is good or bad i didn't get to see lui in u/20 last year to get a real gauge on him with things like ability to control the flow of the team in attack.
i think benji is one of the poorest game managers in the game.
not real sure what lui is like in this regard as he seems to be playing it pretty safe out there like most youngsters do their first full year.i do like how consistent he is in execution,very few errors in his game.
defense he just hangs on,but he hasn't showed to be a big liability,but the calls for him to play lock is out of the question for me until he improves his defense in a big way.and that would be at least 2 years away.
so far i like what i see from lui in first grade.
he has the ability to play the ball before at and through the line.
moltzen only ball plays once through the line and i wonder how long he can live off the dummy outside.

seems more thought goes into the kicks by lui than benji and moltzen combined which has been a major issue for us for years.
i wish i could mesh lui and moltzen together and i would have a top shelf half ready to explode.pity he would still be injured though.

Dunno if he controlled games as such in the 20s, but at times he had the game at hand on a string and he was the main man, often playing like a forward but as a ball playing five eight, he was so good to watch, confident, strong, oozed enthusiasm….but at time too tended to drift in and out

Someone else here mentioned lock...I see him as a lock in future, its a formality imo

Moltzen over Lui anyday. Lui sometimes appear too casual out there and comes across as being lazy. i think he has a great future, but at the moment heis out of his depth. for the time being, we have no choice but to have him there, but next year i hope its moltzen in the 7.

Firstly, Benji isn't going anywhere. Any suggestion that he should be moved to centre or fullback is fantasy talk and therefore pointless.

So the other half needs to be somebody whose game compliments Benji's.

The fact of the matter is Benji and Tim clicked, and clicked quickly.

However, Lui's confidence grows with every game. He still seems reluctant to take control, and his reserve indicates to me that he's also reluctant to play a natural game. This is emphasised by the fact that Marshall and Farah were often by-passing him completely, especially early in the season. But he and Benji are playing better together and before his latest knee injury he strung a few good games together.

I still think he has a long way to go, but I'm happy with his progress so far. It also seems like it's part of Sheens' master plan.

As for next season, if Lui is first choice halfback, I worry about where Moltzen will fit into the team.
